Lockheed P-80 Derivatives

Here is my first physical build based on Tophe's contribution to the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star and T-33 and derivatives thread.

I'm calling it a P-80F (E was already taken) as flown by the RNoAF.  The in-progress pictures are here.











Bill of materials are:

A. Airfix P-80C fuselage and landing gear.
B. Fuji T-1 wing and tail
C. Tip tanks from a 1/128 Constellation
D. Xtradecal T-33 Foreign operators
E. 1000 LB bombs from the spares box

What I did rounded off the vertical and horiz stabilizers, moved the horiz stabilizers about 1/2 way up the vertical stabilizer. Lots of PSR to blend in the T-1 wing.  Base paint is Tamiya rattle can TS-30 silver with hand painted trim.

Nice to see you got the RNoAF roundels the right way round.

When I built my first Norwegian model, an RF-5A, I put them on pointed end forward. It just seemed the correct alignment to me....  :-X

You know Kit I had to look at the instructions 3 times to ensure I did not mess up. I don't understand either why the pointy end is not facing in the direction of flight.

That is a cool idea. If I squint real hard I see a one-engine chunky little cousin to the Lockheed XF-90. The tail shapes, the wing sweep, and the tip tanks make that association possible. Well done, sir!

Well observed and well said.  FAAMAN as well.  Is a fine build in 1950s era fashion.  Scheme, markings, proportions all work. :)

Here is my next installment: The P-80G in Spanish service, 1968. Guns removed and updated to carry AIM-4Ds. ISTR installed under the nose.

Here is the inspiration:



And here is my interpretation:











Bill of materials are:

C. Drop tanks from a Tamiya 1/100 A-6A
D. ISTR from Monogram F-4C/D
E. F-104 Pitot tube
F. Xtradecal T-33 Foreign operators
G. AIM-4Ds from the Hasegawa Air Weapons III kit

I sawed off the tail and added the G.91 tail at the turbine warning stripe. Less PSR this time to blend in the G.91 wing but I needed to remove about 5mm on the inboard side.  Base paint is Tamiya rattle can TS-30 silver with hand painted trim.

Probably would have the same probs in the transonic range of flight that other 50's non area ruled birds had.
