Friends of ours did that back in the mid-1990s. Built a camper out of a Unimog (next gen, though) with radio cabin and went down the western end of Africa all the way down to South Africa and then went north again on the eastern side. They stopped by in Nairobi. I was a bit surprised, seeing that they had painted it in a sand tone and applied some brown stripes. They thought it looked neat, a bit zebra-ish. I said it looked like a straight-up military vehicle and that it might be unwise to go through northern Kenya, southern Sudan or Ethiopia painted that way. Awkward moment, then, "nah, we'll be fine". Worked out and they made it back to Germany without getting shot at, but I still think that was more luck than brains.
