Land Rover Series 1 Pickup

Hi all,

Nearly finished the Boxkite and I've realised i have no "yellow Land Rover"  To use for the scale shots so I'm rapidly constructing one as i post.

This model Land Rover first came on the market in 1954 so it  comes under the Fabulous Fifties  label,  though maybe not quite so Fabulous 

Incidentally the Pogo first flew in 1954 and yours truly burst on the scene in 1954 also, amazing coincidence 

Anyway here's the kit



It's 1/43 so not quite 1/48 scale  but near enough.

Hi all

I said I was building this one fast and we're at the priming stage already

A shot of the inside of the cab before I put the roof on.......



The kit plastic is very waxy and although I gave it a wash before starting the paint in the box is not adhering very well, fortunately most of the external paint will have a primer base.

Aaaand were ready for primer........

The fit of this kit is quite good most of the bad fit is due to yours truly rushing it

Top coat has been applied.



A nice shiny yellow, painting the underneath as i post in preparation for fitting the wheels and transmission.

Hi all

The Land Rover is almost complete, just the transfers to do which are in the design stage

A couple of quick shots,.....





Sadly I will not be able to use this for the  1/48 scale comparison shots, I know it was going to be a bit big but up against 1/48 scale figures it is too tall (I was warned). The figures head/ eyeline should be roughly in line with the roof but standing a few figures next to it the roof is above their heads . It just doesn't look right.

There are other Land Rovers out there but I may have to compromise on the age of the vehicle, or find an alternative 1950's utility vehicle.

Have you seen or built the Airfix 1/48th scale Bedford truck kit?  With some effort/modifications it can become a useful component for a vignette such as you have planned.  I have one that is partially built as part of learning about the vehicle and was impressed with the three versions that are available in the box.

While not a Land Rover, the Bedford is 1/48th scale and usually affordable.

Thanks chaps thats really helpful.  Not a treadhead or builder of much 1/48 stuff so this is useful.

So much choice,  it's coming down to the Bedford MWD, the Austin Tilly or a Jeep although the jeeps are mega expensive and out of stock.

I also like the Kurogane for its quirky looks but I can't really work it into the scenario

You can get the jeeps direct from South Korea, if you really want one but, as you say, expensive (Why aren't there any in styrene? one might ask);

Revell did have a 1/48[ish] Jeep included with their CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter kit.  It looked like a Jeep as long as did not get too close to it.  The Jeep was included to tow what was supposed to represent an M101 105mm h owitzer that was just as bad on details.

Link to the kit in question so you can look at the kit instructions or reviews: ScaleMates.com > Revell (4511) 1/48th scale CH-53 Sea Stallion.  I have a couple of the later Revell CH-53G (GSG) kits with the Jeeps and Howitzers if you really, really, really want one.  Not sure it would be worth your while considering the postage costs. 

As far as Jeeps (Willys MB) go there was also the Verlinden 1/48th scale resin kits that were available many moons ago and they still show up on eBay and other venues on occasion.

This is a really good kit and I can see why they market this one as a beginners kit because the fit is excellent.i font think I'm going to pull many votes on this one but I had great fun with this build regardless.

Put the Land Rover down a little in some ruts and the figure standing on a piece of stone. Like they do in the movies with Tom Cruize.
