Hawker Typhoon 1b Sharkmouth
« on: July 17, 2022, 08:46:00 PM »
Hi All

Just another boring OOB that i will be doing in the background of the sptfire.

This fulfils a few want to do's i.e wanted to do a Typhoon, wanted to do another new tool Airfix kit after building the excellent Hurricane 1, wanted to do the only sharkmouth Typhoon after seeing it in a profile publication which Airfix have conveniently modelled in the new kit. So its a good excuse to start one here

Here's the starting point

The detail is very good and you can open up the gun bays if you want.  i'm going to model them closed, wheels down and rocket armament

Thanks for that chaps.

Now here's a conundrum,  the limited resources at my disposal show the sharkmouth with a red mouth or just the teeth as portrayed in the Airfix kit.

Its possible that it had both during its life, but does anyone have a definitive answer ?

Any info would be greatfully appreciated.

 Thanks GTX

Essentially either of the choices could be used, which is good

I will probably opt for the red mouth it looks more aggressive

Hi all

Sadly the quality of the moulding of the Typhoon is not as good as the Hurricane. The fuselage  fits OK but is a bit fiddley, trying to install the tail wheel and cooling flap without getting glue on them was quite difficult. In the end i left out the cooling flap as it kept falling out.I will glue it in later.

The fit of the wing leaves a lot to be desired.

To get the leading and trailing edges  to meet I have had to leave a prominent step at the wing root

Also the joint under the cockpit will need some filler. I will have to be careful not to scratch the little transparency

Hi all

Managed to do a reasonable job on tidying up the wing joints and like the spitfire it has received its first two coats of grey.

I see you have a larger scale Spitfire lower wing camouflaged for hiding at the back of your build space. ;D

Seriously, though, I almost didn't notice it, except for the wheel well openings! :-\

A Spitfire was bought buy a bunch of proto-hippies back in the day when you could get one for scrap metal prices. Random buckets of paint and the right mushrooms and there you go!

Funnily enough I have a similar idea in my book of things to do, although this involves a modernish light aircraft.

Can't see any problem with using an ex Warbird tho' ;D ;D

Hi all

Colour problems with the Spitfire were duplicated on this one. But I have scored a couple of home goals as well.

Firstly when cutting the wheels from the sprue the last component instead of dropping softly onto a piece of kitchen towel went zinggg into the air and was last heard pinging off various objects in the basket beside the work table, lost to furniture monster, rookie mistake , cursed myself for being an idiot.

Then the exhaust stacks disappeared, they were successfully cut off the sprues and subtly painted, then put somewhere safe to dry. So safe I can't find them !
Should have put them in the  box, stupid mistake, cursed myself for being a complete idiot.

I couldn't find anything suitable in the spares box (i was NOT going to fit wheels from a first generation Typhoon), so I've had to buy in some resin replacements. They should arrive in the next couple of days, so watch this space.

The Typhoon is complete apart from said components so one nights modelling time should see it completed.

By the way the decals on this kit are fantastic, not too shiny, and no trimming needed, just cut from sheet, plonk in water and slide into position. They did seem to grip quite quickly but that may have been the Hataka paint, plenty of water was required.

Hi all

Well all the bits arrived and wouldn't you know it the original exhaust stacks turned up aaagh ! However, that was in my interest as the resin replacements, whilst good, were going to be so difficult to cut off there molding block, I decided to go with the originals. Thirty minutes later, one complete Typhoon.

Here's the pics

Very nice! And the markings are truly dramatic - even beyond that biggest of all shark mouths

Does anyone know if any operational wartime RAF units outside of 2 TAF used Type C.1 roundels on upper wing surfaces?

The straight on nose shot just makes me think how much that fuselage needs Corsair style wings! Like I need another project!!!!!
