Scandinavian AFI Geirfugl, Battle of the Vinland Sea
Nice! Not sure about the Auk part of the name but the Firebrand was certainly Great (in size, at least)
(Thanks too for an unintentional nudge. I have a half-finished history of a surviving Vínland which needs completing ...)
I do like a good Vinland story! That will involve a surviving norse Greenland as well? And will it stretch into modern times?
Cool! My storyline features a sort of Vínlandic commonwealth (beginning as settlements throughout the St Lawrence Basin but, as later European colonialism begins, being reduced to Vínland itself, Markland, and Helluland.
The Greenlandic Norse colonies fade as in OTL (after the end of the Medieval Climate Optimum) with much of the population of the Western Colony relocating to Helluland or Markland. With the onset of the Little Ice Age, contact with Ísland is also temporarily lost.
Despite colder temperatures and stormier weather, connections with Ísland are re-established by 1550. A lucrative trade in timber between Markland and Ísland then became possible, in part, because of improvements in boat-building (a result of Vínlandic exposure to Breton and Basque fishing boats).
Anyway ... blah, blah. I should just get back to writing the damned thing!
