No tricks .... well not many at any rate
Joking aside it's pretty basic stuff really and a mix of techniques which I think is the key, building up layers.
I used GWs shade paints, which is pigment in an acrylic clear matt varnish (mostly). I thinned it out with water and Tamiya X20A and first applied it neat, them added chestnut and black for differing effects. I give it a light matt varnish every so often to seal it in then apply more, a steady build up of less is more. It also has some pigment drybrushed on in places. Because of the white finish I had to be careful not to overdo things and definitely thinned things more than usual .....
