No, it was an 80s Popular Mechanics article and it was both thin on detail and enthusiastic to the point of absurd. Interestingly it stats the 'future vehicle', it hadn't been adopted yet, would be armoured against small arms. If only.

A lot of people had the idea that all were armored. Maybe these were the ones that started the misinformation.

It may have been an early requirement, I don't really know what the specifications were for the initial design. Here's the article I've been referencing.

A friend of mine was in Iraq and his humvee got the uprated engine and suspension but never received the armour. They simply took the doors off it and whenever things looked dodgy the simply floored it. He proudly stated "it's the fastest hummer in the sandbox"
