Austin Tilly Utility Vehicle

Hi all

You probably know about my quest to find a vehicle for my scale shots of 1/48 aircraft that resulted in an overscale landrover, well here is its replacement.



Not many parts its quite a compact kit, I've started pre painting the parts

Hi all

Made some progress on the tilly

Most of the Chassis is complete



Installed the glazing in the body shell and masked it out



Primer coat......



Rust applied then covered with maskol



Brush coated with olive drab, the backstory being this is a surplus military vehicle bought up by a civilian and sprayed yellow, badly.

Some of the green is masked out.







Yellow coat.........





Maskol is rubbed off to reveal the green and rust underneath......





The wear in the back is a bit too regular so that will need addressing, next job is some weathering and shading so it looks used

And now the fun part, the weathering !

First rubbed away the  Mascol  to reveal the rusty bits and underlining green paint then gave the load space a light  rubbing down and added some extra rust and paint to break up the wear pattern a bit, finished off with some oil stains.

The rest of the body got a black wash, which I overdid in the first instance and had to wash a lot of it off, but that worked in my favour.

Although it still looks  a bit over Grimy to me





Also dirtied up the wheels and started preparing a couple of replacement headlights as the ones in the kit are odd and would not work in a civilian setting



Although they don't look very weathered  in this photo

I don't think it looks too grimy, just too streaky, especially on the hood/bonnet. You could probably give the cargo area a thin layer of light brown pigments to simulate dirt and dust.

A light circular buffing motion with a tissue damped with the wash solvent should get rid of that streakiness.

Another method is to use a soft brush damped with solvent to streak the wash more - but think about (then follow) the lines along which water would flow.

Or try both.

Thanks for the advice guys,  went at it with some Tamiya thinners and kitchen roll it now looks a lot less streaky and a little more patchy so greatly improved all round.

Hi all

Took a while to finish but here it is in all its Grimy goodness:-

I added some details in the back, the tool box is full of tiny tools but you can hardly see any of them 







And finally a couple of scale shots with some figures.......






I don't know if this truck represents all of the Tamiya range of vehicles but it was a dream to build and came out well, one of those builds that just falls into place.

But as always, all comments and criticisms gratefully accepted.

Really nice work, 'Mog!     

Bodywork might not have been kept the best but the lack of smoke sediments on the rear indicate that the engine & mechanicals have been well looked after!   



I know Wallace's car (from Wallace & Gromit) was a well kept Austin 35, but I still kept expecting them to appear in the cab of this build.

Not all, but pretty close, Tamiya kits just work.
