Compact Hovering Air Transport, Gas Propelled Testbed
« on: April 20, 2025, 06:15:39 AM »
This may become a real model....

Just for fun, I asked CHATgpt to design an open frame, two seat ducted jet VTOL aircraft, similar to the Garret STAMP:

It asked good questions to refine the idea. I also asked it to generate a 3 view, plus 1/35 scale STL files for printing in my resin printer. It asked if I wanted it as a single part, for resin or filament printing, print area - all the right questions.

I ran out of allocated time for it to finish today, but this is what it came up with. Note that it has yet to correct the engine style, position and add STAMP like ducts. It will also have to change the controls, but so far, it's close to what I asked. I'll get the design refined over the next two days:

It also screwed up the 3-vew and didn't provide a top view:

I also let it come up with names that included CHATgpt. The post title was the one I liked the best:

Compact Hovering Air Transport, Gas Propelled Testbed
Experimental Unit - 1962

CHATgpt might be useful for generating designs or parts for models. Let's see; CHATgpt products are often gold plated bull feces.

Cool project. Looking forward to seeing it.

I always liked the Garret STAMP and even bought a Dragon 1/35 OH-6 to try to make one but I gave up on it as I have no scratch building skills whatsoever. I ended up selling the Dragon kit maybe 15 years ago.

It looks pretty interesting so far. It is gonna need fuel tanks, methinks... ;)

Ramba, I've done the same. The Dragon kit is not the best for this conversion, though.

Craig - I think the blob behind the seats is supposed to be a fuel tank, but since I have full control, I'll ask it to place a realistic fuel tank, somewhere and replace the steering wheel.

I think I got the Dragon kit maybe 20-25 years ago and it was the only kit in 1/35 back then. I sold the kit real cheap a few years after buying it because I opened the inside bags and clipped off the two main fuselage halves to see how I would tackle the conversion. I didn't even attempt converting it to the STAMP though as way back then it was a daunting task and still is today.

The fit of the transparencies on the Dragon kit is poor. A real motivation killer.

Interesting, I immediately thought of this ....

Hmmm, I'm not seeing the "VTOL" ducts on that ... & the rear view doesn't quite mesh with the off-kilter engined fore & side views.  ???

Chatgpt is very confidently wrong and this is no exception. I pointed out errors, it tried to correct them and introduced more. I don't have high hopes for this project.

Been an interesting experiment though from what I can see.

As expected, this was an utter fail. After confidently agreeing that it could generate an STL file (even asked if I wanted binary or ASCII) it discovered that oops, it couldn't generate STL files. It could email me .STEP files, which I agreed, but failed again, because it can't email files outside the conversation sandbox. It then generated ASCII .STEP data that would surely work... except it ended up as nothing. Finally it said "why don't I describe the objects with dimensions, and you can easily recreate it in your CAD software!"

I could have done that easily, myself! No, ChatGPT, why don't you go devour feculence...

Good try, mate, but you know as well as we do that AI is AS. ;)
