Skyraider biplane
« on: September 23, 2024, 10:06:35 AM »
Well, I've finally started this project. We will see if I can keep it simple and not let the AMS take control.
Here's the parts pic.

I'm using the wings and fuselage that had the paint stripped off a long time ago. Plus the spare set of wings that are pulled apart. There wasn't any cockpit detail at all. These parts were given to me a long time ago by a friend at my club. I'm going to dig up some other engines to place between the wings somehow. I have to figure out how to make it asymmetrical to make it more Topheish.
I had to clamp the second set of wings to the desktop to try and straighten them. Both had a noticeable downward warp. I applied some liquid glue and left it overnight. Much better now.

Nice job with those clamps. That is such a straightforward fix that I would have probably struggled with and made more complicated than it needs to be  :-[

I started the removal of the bomb pylons and filled the wheel wells. I have to figure out a wing center section for the upper wings to fit over the cockpit. I think I might put the upper wing on a pylon over the cockpit rather than attach it to the top of the canopy. I've got a crazy idea to lengthen the fuselage but that might make it too complicated and run over the time span. I've got to remember to keep this simple!

This is going to be too cool!  8)

... and filled the wheel wells...

Which now look like intriguing, red-and-white alien space-fighter markings!  Hmmm ... an off-world Skyraider bipe?  ;D

Working on getting the bottom of the wings smoothed out. Pylons are gone and wheel wells filled in. Just a little more putty. Famous last words. I need to work on what's holding up the top wing. Sorry, the red, white and black are covered by putty now. Might make an interesting company logo........

I’m working out the gull wing. I think I’ll cut it at the wing fold line. I’m trying to piece together two slightly smaller engines to mount on the wings and then build a bubble nose in place of the regular engine. I think I’m going to have to raid the A-20 Havoc kit I bought at a show for its engines it might just work.

From the description, sounds like it might look like a Fleet Freighter (updated, of course).

Now that’s an interesting design! I wonder why the landing gear was so tall? Not for prop clearance that’s for sure.

So here we go,

My, what a big nose you have!
I found a what appeared to be a 1/32nd scale P-40 spinner. Fits great so there you go. The upper wings are glued up with a piece of wing from some German bomber that I picked up at a garage sale. Everything is covered in putty right now so not much to show. More to follow when there is more to show.

The pilot reports much better visibility on landing approaches.
Actually, looking at it now I think I should have lengthened it a cm or so.
