Side Projects - Greyhound and Brit Weapons Carrier
« on: July 23, 2024, 02:03:05 PM »
While procrastinating on the E25 build, our club went off to a build weekend.

So that led to more started models, of which a couple are Whiffers. Not huge amounts of effort going into them.
Using the Tamiya Greyhound, well M20 Command Car and Quad, both long time stash lurkers.

Greyhound/M20 went through a couple of thought bubbles, but settled on wedging in a 20mm Flak  38

The Quad Weapons Carrier, is due to the actual body work being trashed and perhaps destined for another life elsewhere.
So build up a tray and so far I am planning on putting a 3Inch Mortar in there. Started out as a WW2 type gun truck idea, with perhaps 2 Vickers MMG, but I think the mortar works better for a soft skin.

Using some left over LRDG truck bits and building up a cab area.

More to come as they evolve and go through the "does this work" processes.

Your Bedford is looking really good with the emphasis on additional details.

The M8 Armored Car takes on a new weapon system with little resistance.  An excellent combination of the parts and one that I would never have imagined until now that was possible.  Makes you wonder what could be done with the M8 and one of those angular turrets armed with the KwK.30/KwK.38 20mm cannon and the MG.34 coaxiall machine gun that had an open top and a mesh cover.

I like them both. Putting a captured gun to use in the extra vehicle that was sitting in the motor pool.

Great repurpose on both! I have a partly built Tamiya Quad - I think it's been on my unfinished pile the longest.

I'm following this with interest. Your mods look great.

Or mounting your Flak 38 in a captured vehicle to give you better mobility. ;)

Or a mortar  ;)
As the add of the days of yore said... not so squeezy.

The venerable Italeri US 81mm mortar finally gets a run.

Now both Mortar carriers

I had both the Riich Models set of Brit weapons which had a  mortar and the Resicast 3 Inch Mortars, so a side by side comparison.

it will be one of these and orientation of forward vs aft facing mortars is in tinker mode as well.
Not totally discounted the Flak 38, probably slightly modded a bit more, but after the last session, it could be headed back to the box 'o bits.
it does fit nicely in the Quaddy Weapons carrier, but that has all been done before.

Aft-facing is kinda handy for shoot-and-scoot. </vote>

Plus you're not firing over the driver's head & deafening him. (Or her .... Thank you, Reg.)

Quad Weapons Carrier proceeds.

Cab and body work

Mortar is on an arc mount to some traverse option, which is 3D printed. Playing around with ammo stowage options. So far I can get 60 rounds on hand,  probably a couple more boxes would fit.
Boxed rounds on wheel arches might get replaced with an open, ready rounds type setup. I have the remains of the Tamiya US M3 Halftrack mortar kit part, so that might get hacked up.

Side Profile

Since these images, more work on the tilt rails over the tray Passenger area and adding out a few more storage boxes

Nice!  Looks exactly like what you would expect a mobile mortar portee to be.

Yup! Very nice indeed. And I like the detail that the base of the mortar is directly above the rear axle
