"Top Gun: Maverick" was one of the top-performing blockbusters of 2022. Although far from a science fiction film, it did contain one clear sci-fi element: the fictional SR-72 Darkstar Mach 10 hypersonic research aircraft actor Tom Cruise's character flew in the movie's stunning prologue.
Okay, the Darkstar isn't quite fictional. It's based on the SR-72 supersonic reconnaissance drone long rumored to be under development by Lockheed-Martin to replace the now-retired SR-71 Blackbird. The filmmakers worked closely with Lockheed to design this fictional manned version of it's not-quite-Top-Secret experimental aircraft and build a full-sized mock-up for filming purposes. This gives the design a level of authenticity rarely seen in Hollywood fantasies.
After a year in development, Fantastic Plastic Models now offers the SR-72 Darkstar in 1:72 for your fantastic modeling pleasure. Designed by our resident aerospace expert Scott Lowther and produced in cast and 3D printed resin by Catalyst Creations, our kit comes with 44 pieces plus custom decals designed by JBOT.
