Cargo Trailer
« on: May 26, 2025, 11:37:07 AM »
I've decided to start a thread for the cargo trailer I started under the Alabama Slammer build thread. As the Slammer is finished and entered in the kitbash GB I thought it would be a good idea to put it in it's own thread to prevent any confusion as to what's in the GB and what's not.

Here's a little update on the trailer. I've started building steel shields from corrugated plastic sheets. Something to keep the cargo from getting too shot up. The plan is to make it look like it was cut from junk shipping containers kind of like this gun truck.

So here's the story so far.

And a start on some stuff to fill it up with. The wooden boxes were painted with Citadel Colors Flesh and then a heavy wash of AV Dark Rust. Two of them were already OD green and washed with the same Dark Rust. I should pick out the metal parts with something worn looking.

There will be an opportunity for some tarp covered stuff if I can make it look like a blue plastic one. Another option is giant cardboard boxes. They seemed to be everywhere.
I have the AV rust and dirt paint set and I've started stippling on some rust colors. My bottle of Micro Mask is still good so I might apply some of that tonight yet to mask off the rusty parts. I hope to resemble what Old Wombat did on his PBRs.
I'll have to look at that cargo bed floor. Much too clean. Probably not much rust but plenty of worn metal and dirt.

And the latest update on the trailer. I made a big attempt at rusting the steel sheets. You'll have to tell me what you think. It wasn't looking right at first but I kept adding different colors from the Vallejo rust weathering kit until it looked close. I wanted it to look like bad rusting where the sheets were cut apart and welded together again.

The sheets look almost white in the pics but they are a light grey. On second thought I should have gone with a railroad reddish brown or something but too late now.

Not bad! Not bad at all!

I find stippling the rust effects colours on with a flat-cut stiff brush gets the spotty look of real rust, & for something like these panels I would do the rust first over a larger area (I did all of the visible metal sheets on the PBR), then stipple on liquid mask where you want the rust to show through, then paint.

If you want streaks, you gloss coat, put spots of different rust effect colours along the edges of the rust area & swipe downwards with a damp, long haired soft brush.

That's what works for me, anyway.

If they're not glued in you could give that a try, if you feel the need.

I tried that and maybe my liquid mask is old or something but it just wouldn’t peel off. If I try again I’ll have to strip the sheets and start from scratch. No big deal either way.

I have a lump of old (Vallejo) liquid mask on my desk for just this purpose &, if that doesn't work, I use a rubber eraser, which usually does the trick.

I’m going to strip it and try again. I just bought a citadel color that might just resemble a shipping container color. Are they the same color on the inside as the outside? Anyone know how to thin Citadel paints to spray?

FWIW, the 20.0' container I have here at the house has a light gray interior vs the dark blue exterior color.

Well I’m finished with the stripper. Back down to white plastic again. I used Easy Off with the yellow cap as it has lye in it that removes the paint. Even then, the enamel grey paint came off but the acrylic had to be scraped off.

I’ll have think about that interior color. It would make sense to use a light color inside the container. I bought some new Micro Mask so I’ll see if that works better.

Acrylic should come off easily with isopropyl or denatured alcohol. The rust doesn't look quite right, though.

For a steel container such as mine the paint is for corrosion protection.  Containers constructed from aluminium could be left unpainted on the inside.

I’ve heard that many containers are made from Coreten steel that’s supposed to surface rust then stop. I don’t know how well that works. But it’s a good excuse to throw some brown at it.
I’m working on replacing patio bricks that have crumbled from being sprinkled with sidewalk salt every winter. It’s the path from the house to the garage so it needs it. My wife falls over paper clips so ice removal it paramount. Or it’s another trip to the ER. No model building tonight. I’m going to bed.

Well it does pay to read the directions. It says right on the Micro Mask bottle to use enamel paints as it will stick to paints with water in them. That’s exactly what happened. I wonder if a Testors gloss coat, followed by the Micro Mask, followed by the Citadel paint would work. The Vallejo rust colors are acrylic of course but would the Testors gloss be enough to get the Micro Mask to release? I may put a coat of the Testors gloss over the Micro Mask to keep the Citadel color from soaking into it.

I'd take the easier road & swap to Vallejo Liquid Mask, it works fine with acrylics.

I think I have the rust situation worked out. I had to use duct tape to get the mask to peel off. It look pretty good now. I think I will have to refine my technique as it’s been a lot of work. Inside corners and small detail parts are a challenge. Pics to follow.
