Finnish Anti Air Missile Platform

Time to get into this GB.
Again it was a lot of box removal and replacement.
First up started with a Stryker but that sort of has all the platforms in real life and just a marking change is not really my gig.


So fossicked out a preloved and parts missing Tamiya T-62. It donated the turret to my Hovercraft Tank. So a decent hull.
Also in a box of stuff was the vast majority of the missile mount from the trumpeter SA-6 Gainful, I had used the hull on another build.
So.. lets run with those maybe, so first up some experiments on size and if I do have enough bits


A short session later and the basic bits are underway.


Going to go Finland as they have used a lot of Soviet gear so the match up makes some sense with a 70's timeline perhaps.
Lets see if the mojo keeps going.

I think it would work anytime from 70s to 90s. Maybe even later if the missiles and systems are modernised (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marksman_anti-aircraft_system).

Just yesterday, we were talking with a guy who has some clue about tank tactics in Finland. Apparently foreign tank units, used to fighting in open spaces, can be in trouble at exercises in Finland. There's just not that much open space. Finnish tank formations are trained to use cover, and there's lots of that. Soviet tanks like T-72 were quite good for using cover (trees, small hills, etc) because of their compact size: stay where the enemy cannot hit you and ambush him..

I have one "mostly built" & in dire need of a paint job ... It's only been in that state for ten years, now.

 Not me. My interest in Soviet Armor takes a nose dive (with a couple of exceptions) right after the T-44. Still the Gainfuls do looks sharp, and this should be a nifty build.

Bit of RW happening, but back on the business.

Cobbled up a 3D printed turret mounting to add the missile rails to. Could not find the original SA-6 kit one, but would have been too small for the existing gaping chasm of the turret.
Still some mods need to clear the engine deck and drivers hatch, plus add in some sort of command cupola or similar.



The printed version might get replaced by plastic card yet if the clean up process gets too messy.

Elsewhere, someone was commenting on how blasé we're becoming about 3D printed pieces.

For some (like me), this technology remains highly esoteric. But I love the notion that we've (well, you've, really!) reached the point where 3D-printed articles might simply end up acting as 'mules' for plastic card replacements

Bit of progress, sort of in the zone on this.

First up, the prototyping of the turret form using the 3D printer. Designed on 3D builder on Windows 10, the only thing was the time, each print took about 2 hours on fine settings


Final version at the "good as it is going to get" stage.

Looking good The combination of old and new with 3D printed and scratch built parts is a good example that 3D printing isn't a replacement for modeling but just another technique we can add to our tool box.

Almost there for all intents and purposes.

Frustratingly some of the kits sprues and bits like the missile hold down clamps and the front guard rail mounts are AWOL, after rummaging through several boxes of spare sprues, known "I will just leave this here and sort it out later" drawers, some bits just cannot be found. Possibly on another of my builds somewhere, who knows.
Got enough to make it work though.

Ok that involved tipping an entire parts drawer onto the bench and going through it bit by bit almost.

Ah yes, the spares box/drawer is almost as frustrating as the singularity carpet that hoovers up any and every vital part that falls into its insidious grasp never to be seen again!

Initial paint work.

Finnish T-55 esque splinter scheme. I figured that it makes sense, well to me anyway, that the splinter scheme follows through this series of MBT chassis



Decals underway at the moment, then a touch of weathering.

So goodbye Tamiya T-62 with a "forget what brand" BDD conversion set in the Afghan comapaign now it is rebuilt as a Finnish T-62 with SA-6.
Total outlay for the rebuild ? Zero . All from bits left over from other builds or that have been reused for other builds, some in stock plastic card plus a bit of 3D printer Design time and some printer filament.

And the weathering is nicely subtle!

Unlike some builds, which shall remain nameless, it doesn't look like it's driven from Perth to Brisbane via the northern-most route at the end of the Wet Season.

I wasn't sure about having the roundel front and back but, apparently, at least the front roundel was applied at some time or another.

Tremendous - surprising what can be coaxed out of the spares box!   

As my own build design is set circa the very early stages of Finland's SP SAM development, may I be so bold as to reference your Anti-Air Missile Platform as a logical development in my associated backstory?
