The problem with energy weapons is that they can easily be stopped by energy Shields and if you up the power of said shield it would also prevent attacking craft from passing through. However those same Shields prevented the defending craft from shooting back. The result was a virtual stalemate between warring empires.
Once the Shields were up what could you do ?
That’s when the shield buster missile was devised. Essentially it was a long thin two stage rocket, the first stage contains the main rocket engine and a field generator. The second stage also has a rocket engine and carries the payload and guidance system.
The operation of the rocket is fairly simple.
When It is fired at the enemy shield it accelerates to its maximum speed. Once the rocket engine is exhausted the field generator cuts in and generates a force field around the missile which is the reverse polarity of the enemy shield.
When the missile hits the shield the generated fields cancel each other out and a small hole is created allowing the second stage to pass through. The hole does not exist for long and the enemy shield snaps back on the first stage cutting it in two. The first stage, however, is now inside the enemy force field and after releasing what remained of the first stage it ignites it own rocket engine.
The guidance system then detects the energy signature of the enemy’s field generators and guides the rocket onto its target. With enough field generators destroyed the defensive field collapses leaving the target craft open to attack.
It was not the most perfect solution. If the polarity was not correct it would explode uselessly on the shield. If the strength of the enemy shield was stronger than calculated the hole would not be created or it would snap back too early cutting the second stage and wasting the shot.
Nevertheless it was decided to go ahead and an ideal craft was found to deliver the new weapon
The Federation FDF-24 started life as a defensive fighter for use on Corvette and Destroyer class spaceships. They were a rugged and agile fighter of their day but were being replaced by the more modern and capable X-Wing class fighters.
Redesignated FASB-30 the refurbished craft retained its nose cannons and was adapted to carry four of the new “Ion Fist” anti shield missiles. Once it’s rockets were expended it reverted to a role of escort fighter to protect further waves of shield busting space craft.
Results varied from mediocre to spectacular and the FASB-30 was retained in service long after its planned retirement. Eventually it was replaced in service by larger craft that could carry more missiles but as one critic put it
“it’s a bloody useless fighter!”
Which resulted in the FASB-30 temporarily reverting to its escort role. Eventually the space craft was retired and relegated to a training role before being phased out completely.

Hi All
Couldn't resist a Sci-Fi group build
This ones going to be a found objects scratch build based around an empty deodorant bottle,

This is a selection of bits I'm starting with, I haven't decided which missiles to use.

Looking forward to seeing this one develop.

Hi all
Started preparing the body of the spaceship, I have glued a plasticard plate on the back and marked out the engine positions, i have also glued plastic plates top and bottom. The tube is some kind of polypropylene so this will allow me to attach things to it more easily.

Also Started work on the 'Ion Fist' missiles

Hi,
Hum... Very interesting!

Hi all
A bit more progress
I wanted to add a bit of detail to the sides of the spaceship but discovered it was a little wasp wasted and needed to pad it out with plastic card,
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49632478666_5da2a11f72_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iBRqJN) (https://flic.kr/p/2iBRqJN) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
It's not immediately obvious but there are some gaps between the components which I will fill with superglue.
I originally intended to attach the gun armament under the chin of the spaceship but soon realised that it would foul the launch rails of the shield busting missiles, so they have/will be moved to the sides with the main energy cannon being set in the nose.

More progress on the missiles, the field generating array has been added to two of them they will be trimmed when the glue is dry.
Launch rails next......... maybe ........

That is brilliant with those missiles!! great look!

Thanks all
TTC - at the moment there is more work in the missiles than in the craft that carries them ;D

Hi All
Some more progress, the missiles are complete and ready for painting. I have constructed the launch rails but they look a little flimsy I might add one or two braces to stiffen them up

The main ship is coming along nicely, the side fairings have been blended into body, just a little PSR to finish.

I've sourced a couple of fins to hold the attack sensors.

Good progress report. Those missiles are looking lethal.

Nice... very nice.
Great backstory and idea

Hi all
More work in process.
The launch rails have been fitted and the windows masked out. The color scheme is going to be black overall with light gray rails/fins.
The base plastic of the cap is a sort of translucent nylon which I thought would make some natty windows obviously I wont know if this will work until I remove the masking.
Holes have been drilled for the side and front cannons they will be fitted later. I am redesigning the front cannon as I was not happy with my original design.

I'm sorry I haven't commented sooner - this looks like it is coming along nicely!
-
yes, coming along very nicely.
As a suggestion, if you have not/do not intend to glue down the lid, you have the opportunity to do some lighting for the interior by perhaps inserting one of the cheapo electronic tea light units. The light would be soft and diffused but may add a bit of mo curling tweakiness.
-
Aaaah !
Brilliant idea, too late, the lid was super glued shut at the start of the build. That would have back lit the windows a treat.. :-\ :icon_sueno:
My bad, This is what happens when you start with an idea and completely wing it, things can get missed. ::)
Thanks for looking chaps.

Hi all
Real progress, the shield buster has been greeblied up and is now in the paint shop.
Here it is in its primer coat with all the defects sorted awaiting its black final coat, I haven't attached the fins yet to make it easier to spray.

The trapeze thing at the front is a temporary support while it is being sprayed
The next post should be the finished article.
Thanks for looking..............

Thanks guys, I've just printed the decals so not long now

Well, the best laid plans of mice and men and all that, produced the decals but quickly found out that they were absolutely useless on a black background so had to redesign them all over again on white backed transfer paper which threw up a whole set of different problems. I'll report on that in a different thread.
Bottom line is the shield buster is complete. The mouth design is my work, the flames each side were intended for an F-111, the red Stripes from an F-102 both from old decal sheets, the serial numbers are from a Ventura decal sheet and the 29's on the fin were intended for a Dewoitine D520
And without any further delay I present to you Shield Buster FASB-29979 "Claudes Hammer"

I really did miss a trick by not illuminating the cockpit from inside as the windows have come out quite well, if a little ragged at the edges, weathering y'know ::).
Anyways all comments and criticism gratefully accepted.
Thanks for looking

I must say that turned out rather nice. Hard to believe that beneath all of that is a deodorant container.
-
Late to this party. Read about shield busting tech. Well thought out. Also well thought out is repurpose of deodorant container into space ship for shield busting mission. 8)
Like so many builds shows that just because it is small does mean it is simple to build.
-
Oh, that is sexy. Well done!
-
The FASB came out great - the deodorant container was handy; this definitely isn’t a stinker or a build!
-
Purposeful and to the point.
Works for me. Nice job
-
Thanks for the kind comments guys, after the meltdown with the decals I wasnt sure it was right but I'm really happy now !

It has such personality! I love the paint and design.
