Title: The Humble Motor Museum
Post by: ScranJ51 on May 12, 2016, 08:07:02 PM
Gentlemen/Ladies - indulge me please (and sit comfortably - this may take a while):

Concept:

A while ago (like 2 years or so) I thought of a concept where I'd like to display several of my motor racing models in a combined environment.

Hence the concept of the Humble Motor Museum was born.

Now - first off - where to build it:

I had an old cupboard that might work:

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/001.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/001.jpg.html)

So - I removed the doors

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/002.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/002.jpg.html)

Oops - need to move the stash somewhere....

The idea was that each "shelf" in the museum would be a gallery in the "actual" museum - so some testing was carried out:

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/007.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/007.jpg.html)

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/103.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/103.jpg.html)

Yup - that should work - so, lets get into it!!!!

The "Museum" has 7 galleries:  the first is the entry:

This level contains 1/24th scale F1 and Indy cars:

Level 1 - Gallery 1 - is 1/24th Sports racing - European:

Level 2 - Gallery 2 is American Sports racing, Can-Am and Japanese Endurance racing (again 1/24th):

Gallery 3 is Lotus:

some of which are still being worked on by museum staff:

HHMM - an Indy car did sneak in - but one with an F1 (sort of):

Some detail (hope you enjoy this bit old wombat!):

each level has a show are limited by ropes.  This was created by drilling holes in the floor - using thick cotton as the rope, and threading it through the uprights.

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6649_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6649_640x480.jpg.html)

The walking area for patrons (think carpet) is framers matt in different colours (note yellow for the  Lotus gallery - orange for McLaren).

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6396_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6396_640x480.jpg.html)

There is a lighting unit that can be placed on any level of the museum (only one at a time).  This was created by attaching a set of christmas lights to a board:

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/005.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/005.jpg.html)

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/102.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/102.jpg.html)

Then creating a "ceiling" from framers matt and using overhead projector film as the glass:

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/201.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/201.jpg.html)

The effect achieved is quite good (I think)

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6391_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6391_640x480.jpg.html)

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6392_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6392_640x480.jpg.html)

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6393_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6393_640x480.jpg.html)

There have been figures added to some levels:

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6395_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6395_640x480.jpg.html)

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6391_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6391_640x480.jpg.html)

with scratch built furniture:

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/306.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/306.jpg.html)

The guide book and books on sale were created in a similar fashion to the posters:

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/303.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/303.jpg.html)

The view in the front "window"

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6635_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6635_640x480.jpg.html)

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6634_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6634_640x480.jpg.html)

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/scran-Aus/Humble%20building/IMG_6633_640x480.jpg) (http://s203.photobucket.com/user/scran-Aus/media/Humble%20building/IMG_6633_640x480.jpg.html)

The wall art is all scanned and reduced on a colour photocopier then glued to the wall.

There has been a slight "stall" in building.

I hope to resume serios work in about 6 weeks when I retire, and will work to add the F-1 cars still held, such as:

McLaren MP4-4

MP4-5B

MP7

MP8

MP4-13

Tyrrell P34

Ferrari F310

Brabham BT50

Tyrrell 020

Leyton House CG901

Honda RA273

Bennetton 191

Bennetton 194

etc.  etc.  etc.

Wow - what a fantastic project: it looks really good.  :)

Are you going to put glass doors on it when it's finished?

Weaver - probably - if for no other reason than to keep the dust out!

Glad you like it

Very impressive!  A simple, yet effective method to display your finished models and protect them from dust all at the same time.  Brilliant!

Don't let Jay Leno see this, or he'll be after your cars thinking they are 1:1 scale!

WOW you put so much into cars and museum. :)
Looks fantastic, is beyond the call of duty.
Ceiling lights work super realistic.
