Title: WWI Rolls Royce Armored Car
Post by: LemonJello on February 09, 2014, 01:15:56 AM
This is the Roden 1/35 kit British Armored Car Pattern 1920 w/sand tires.  It has been languishing in the unfinished stack, but I'm calling it done and putting it into the display case.

Tried to add some weathering with pastels, still need some practice.

Good job!
I like it!

(This would be a nice part of our WW1-GB at DMMB.)

Yes brilliant job!

Always liked the Rolls, Chauvel had a Squadron of them in the Middle East and wanted more. It is actually is too bad Chauvel didn't get his way for a mechanised Australian regular army in the 1920s, there would have been quite a few Rolls Royce Armoured Cars in Australian service if that had occurred.  Then again this is a wiff site, Roden you say......

The RAF still had a company of these at Habbaniya at the time of the siege in 1941. My Dad, who was marooned there at the time, ended up in charge of a few of them.

See here for a little more information :-  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_1_Armoured_Car_Company_RAF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_1_Armoured_Car_Company_RAF)

My Dad, who was marooned there at the time

I bet he could have told you some interesting stories from that experience.

He did, more than once.  :)

For his 80th birthday I built these two models on a presentation base for him. (The handles sticking out the end were because he dropped it once and I had to re-build it....) The R-R Armoured Car is a Merlin white metal kit, painted up as 'Buffalo' as Dad's car was named, and that's him in the pith helmet and khahki shorts standing at the front.  :)

The Audax was Dad's favourite aircraft when he was on IV(AC) Sqdn. at Farnborough in 1935 or so. It started off as an Airfix Demon and John Adams at Aeroclub made me a one-off white metal conversion kit to turn it into an Audax which he later put into production, and a superb job he made of it too.

I might add that it's the ONLY 1/72 bi-plane I've ever made!

Thank you all for the compliments - the kit itself goes together pretty well, there are some fiddly bits here and there, and the wheel to axle connection isn't the best design I've come across.  Painting is probably what put this one in "hanger queen" status for a while - but I am trying to wrap up all my started projects before starting anything new.

Great job; I haven't seen many of those Roden kits built-up. The camo certainly works well. Is that a Boys anti-tank rifle in the turret?

It is. I chose the version with the most "things that go bang" mounted on it.  Though I was tempted to go with the paint scheme that had a British roundel covering the entire turret roof.  Firepower won out.
