Title: IDF Classical
Post by: raafif on April 23, 2025, 07:47:22 AM
I've been finishing off quite a few ½-built kits lately so to actually build a "new" kit I pulled out my old resin IDF "Classical" M-113.  Didn't want to buy a new kit as a base so I'm recycling an old hull that was chopped up for a long dead project.

Already, a few years ago, I cut off the massive pour-blocks of the side-armour but need to continue for the other items ..... after I fix the cut hull.

I suppose there is a M113 under there somewhere

Reconstructive plastic surgery for the ERA tortoise.  ;)

Interesting! Is this a Zelda?

This version, as usual based on the M-113, came after the Zelda (pierced slab armour skirts - Academy kit).  It saw very limited service as the heavier Achzarit & Nagmachon were more survivable.

You can see it here:

It had ERA rather than the perforated steel plates of ZELDA.  However, the added weight of the armor led to limited mobility and reliability problems and the vehicle was eventually removed from service.

Hull comming on – the rear plate & back corner of the top deck were warped so cut them out.  I don’t have a front plate but I’ve added a few bits of plasticard so the new armour panel will cover it nicely.  I don’t presently have a rear door either so may have to do something there if I can’t find one.

Definitely looking forward to seeing this built up. I was looking to do one like this but as a what if with an RWS on it.

Rebuilt the rear section with a home-made door & paint.  Again I came a cropper with paint colour – I’ve been using Humbrol 72 (a darkish brown) for IDF vehicles, but now that Humbrol is finally dead, I’ve been trying to get the same colour in Revell.  As usual the colour equivalent charts are WRONG – Revell 89 (a light-ish beige) is NOT the same !!

sometimes a little delicate strong-arm is required - removing the last of the enormous pour blocks so that the side-armour sits flush.

Doing some violence to that extra resin!

Well that sorts out the resin sanding residue issue

Stuck the sides on but still lots of tidying up required including filling bubbles in the resin bits.  Have cut the blocks off the crew's armored windows & trimmed most of the surplus resin in corners.

Added the wheels – found I was two short so had to fudge a pair from some strange kit.  Added tracks – didn’t have the right ones so again fudged some from the junk pile.
Added a commanders cupola & the resin IDF crew’s shield kit to the rear hatch & cupola – these shields will need glass (PVA glue) after painting.

Now complete apart from some weathering, “glass” windows & three crew figures.  Sadly these vehicles never carried markings in service.

Nice work! Its a dramatic-looking little beastie ... but that exhaust pipe extension really takes the cake

Thanks, the M-113 exhaust is normally ejected up - the smoke helpfully indicating a target for the enemy.  I wish more people would be considerate about where they send their combustion waste products - I hate getting stuck behind a car or truck with a worn out diesel engine ::)

That came out great! Hard to believe there's an M113 under all that.
