In the 1950s and 1960s SAAB were engaged in the development of a future fighter/attack plane. The were no end to the designers imagination. From a ultra small single seater to a multi engined mini B-58 - everything was tested. On the list was also a VTOL attack plane - the Projekt 1500-01, based on the Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine of the Harrier. It never went beyond the drawing board.
But what if!
Flygvapnets new VTOL attack plane entered service in 1974 as the A 38 Järven (the wolverine) with Flygflottilj F6 at Karlsborg Air Base. In the following years it was engaged in close support operations with the swedish army and to that purpose had several small detachment based in clearings of the forests of Central Sweden.
My build will be based on a Harrier GR.7 kit from Mister Craft. That kit was acquired by pure accident and is in my opinion a waste of money - way below current standard. It was condemned to be stored in eternal oblivion in a corner of deep darkness. But with a lot cutting, swearing and good old nordic "sejd" it might be turned into something usefull.
-
Go for it!
-
This should be good
-
Your description of the kit was too kind.
What are your plans for the delta wings? Sourced from another kit or crafted from plastic card stock?
A delta wing Harrier clone is certainly an interesting subject.
Good luck!
-
This is gonna be good
And love your Järven name too! As Jeff's tagline points out: "'Research shows wolverines don't like to be teased" ;D
-
Oh very nice plan.. and great use of what sounds like a fairly ordinary kit.
-
By using the dimensions of the Pegasus engine I have made a 1/72 scale drawing of the Projekt 1500-01. Comparing it to the kits fuselage it turns out, that the fuselage of the Järven was at bit longer. So - CUT
-
Ahhh, the satisfying sound of the razor saw
-
CUT - CUT -CUT. What used to be an airplane kit is now a 3-d puzzle
-
I always thought model kits were 3D puzzles. :-\
-
;D

CUT - CUT -CUT. What used to be an airplane kit is now a 3-d puzzle
Now all you need to do is randomly jumble up all the parts and, ta-da, job done! ;D
-
Love this already! ;)

Ta-Da
The parts have been jumbled up and here is the result. The fuselage have been extended and the front exhausts from the Pegasus engine have been lowered as the front and rear exhausts were in line on Järven.

Awesome !

Awesome !
Indeed! And genuinely a 3D jigsaw puzzle
-
Transformation is proceeding
-
Most of the fuselage is now glued together and a lot PSR have been done.
-
And have started thinking about wings and tail
-
There's so much putty & stuff on there it almost looks like it's been carved from a block of wood! ;D

I often think a lot of my own builds are more akin to sculpting than engineering. I think MAT is combining the best of both. Should be pretty neat.
-
Commendable project. Do proceed.
-
Looking good

-
Very different form, moving nicely

I second that!
-
After the first round of PSR, the fuselage was painted in one colour to show where it needs more putty or more sanding. It's almost done.
-
Its time to build the front fuselage of Järven. Its made up of pieces found on my scrap yard. The front of a MiG-23, that donated its swing wings to a Messerschmitt P.1102/5, and a cut down radar nose of a F-4D Phantom.
-
Kitbashing at it finest!! On to the splinter pattern paint scheme! :o ;)
-
Kitbashing at it finest!! ...
Indeed! And that cut-down Phantom radome has really caught the 'personality' of Projekt 1500-01
-
Nice parts usage.. it will come together

At the moment I'm leaning towards the blue/green scheme of the SAAB 105 - another low flying plane of Flygvapnet
-

The is a nice-looking scheme! And one heck of a lot easier to apply than Swedish splinter, I should think.

One day I'll plunge into the splinter camouflage. I have a SK 37E Stör-Viggen lined up for that.
-
Time to get the wings done. They a made up of plasticcard, the wingtips of a Gloster Javelin (that became a Javelin PR.11) and lots of putty.
-
Looking good!
... and lots of putty.
Woah ... I wasn't expecting that! ;D ;D
-
Progress! The front fuselage have now been glued to the rest of the fuselage. Almost there - some PSR will do the rest.
-
Taking shape, bung on some wings and stuff and Done ;D
-
Looking good, MAT!
-
Wings glued to the fuselage. Järven is comming into shape but still some PSR ahead.
-
The Järven has a great shape!
-
The Järven has a great shape!
It does indeed! Are those Järven's intakes from the original Harrier kit?

The intakes are from the original Mister kit Harrier. Slightly modified
-
Lovely work. Now I really, really like the shape
-
Can’t wait to see paint on this!
-
Off to super duper start
-
Fuselage and tailfin united. Ahead a paintjob is waiting.
-
Here comes the paint
-
Really like how the shape is coming together. I find myself wanting to use a similar profile for something sans the vertical tail.
-
Really like how the shape is coming together...
Me too! It is amazing how well those delta wings hide most of the residual Harrier DNA
-
Decals comming on.
-
Looking good
-
Very nice...
-
Finally done
-
Nice!
-
-
Very nice!
And what a business-like bruiser of an airplane ... makes the Harrier look positively dainty by comparison ;D
-
Fine piece of plastic surgery, and a brilliant paint job.

I'm with Robomog and others. Love the concept too :-*
