The engine isn't the problem, its the turret ring and the fact that moving it at all involves a new upper hull casting. When they picked a turret ring diameter that matched the M3 Lee turret, they really hamstrung themselves for future upgrades., A thing that Brit tank designers did time after time in the eaarly years of the war.

If one wanted to scab on a welded plate superstructure you might be able to cut away the entire forward upper hull and add a casemate with a 17pdr (or other big gun) but the layout and odd shapes of the casting really don't lend themselvles to small conversions, You kinda have to cut away the whole upper forward hull to add in something biffer than the 75mm.
