At least some WW2 aircraft carriers had "hanger deck" catapults that could launch aircraft sideways out of the hanger deck. Photos of this are quite rare.

My sister's hubby when she married him was in the RAF as a heavy duty mechanic, they were based at Odiham. I used to go visit them most weekends up until he resigned from the RAF and they went to South Africa to live.

In fact, there is nothing to report at all. Certainly not the uncorroborated occurrence of a non-event in the middle of an empty dry lake bed on 7 August 1963 involving the unsubstantiated Lockheed YF-12A interceptor, 60-6934, which may of may not have taken off from a non existent air base at Groom Lake, aka Dreamland, The Box, Paradise Ranch, Neverland Nevada, on its unconfirmed maiden flight.

North American Aerospace Defense Command @NORADCommand

Two F-22 and two CF-18 fighter aircraft supported by an E-3 Sentry, a KC-135 Stratotanker and a C-130 Tanker from the NORAD positively identified and intercepted two Tu-95 Bear bombers in the Alaskan and Canadian ADIZ on Aug. 8th.

The Russians keep on flying those Bears towards western countries, but with those four huge windmills on the wings, I'm wondering how soon do the defense radars actually pick them up.
