Windhund
« on: January 20, 2023, 05:52:02 AM »
I learned just this morning that the German for 'Greyhound' is 'Windhund'. Thus when I decided to make an autonomous walking drone for fast
reconnaissance, based in the Maschinen Krieger (MaK) universe, I looked at something like a cross between Kow Yokoyama's "Grosserhund" and Boston Dynamics "Big Dog". This will be a quadruped, and owes its origin to a very cheap, but wodefully simple and styrene Christmas ornament from the local Dollar General*

That Christmas ornament looks like a convenient packaging of 80%+ useful styrene shapes!

So, inspired by the MaK Big Dog & the other Big Dog, you're going to be making a Grey Dog? ???

Exactly. I figured google would give me something like 'Grauhund' but Windhund works for me. I did a little digging around for detail bits yesterday-I think I've got some promising bits... :D Be a day or two before I get back to it-I am going to try getting the bench assembled today so I can move the rest of the tools into the shop.

Main body construction is done. The head came from two bridge bits from a 1/700 New Jersey, (Trumpeter, I think. Like a lot of my 'boutght it for bits' kits, it was remaindered at Hobby Lobby.), and a thigh from a 1/144 Tallgeese (Gundam mobile suit. You can see most of the rest of the kit in the Inspiration folder-the grey flattop robot) The hip joints are roadwheels from an Testors/Italeri Stug IV, with the last of my 90's Kotobukiya ball joints to flex the knees. I didn't reckon with the cool slowing down the hardening of my Aves putty as much as it has. I mixed it up 24 hours prior, and it was still more cold butter than soft styrene. Does the stuff have a shelf life?

Anyway, much PSR and detailing to come. And I need to find my airbrush and compressor.

I've had Aves putty around for years and it still works for me.
I don't quite see what direction this is going just yet but I'm sure the clue light will come on shortly.

Yes, I think because of the low temps I'm using it at, the cure time is protracted. It seems to have set up ok. I've added the legs, and am considering adding a tail, which will double as a radar antennae. Hopefully, it will warm up enough to primer in a couple of days. Have to try and find my red spot putty in the meantime.

Progress today, in spite of the weather.

No Chemical weapons capacity, I swear, Inspector! (The 'exhaust cone' is actually the hat from a Jack in the Box 'Jack' Pez dispenser. Not likely to get much work done for a couple of days. The temps have taken a plunge, and the workshop is bit too cool. Need to re-work the knee joints-got in too much of a hurry...

Thanks for looking in and commenting, colleagues-always appreciated.

It stands on it own! major construction is complete, next is a bit more Aves to fair in some contours, scribing access hatches and some other undetermined surface detail. The 'fenders' are just resting in place, and after looking at them for a day, I think I'll leave them off.

A very old (90's, sometime) Drone, cobbled together from bits of a Star Wars AT-ATs armor, a pair of underwing radiators from a Frog ME 410, and missile pylons from...something. I may spruce it up a bit to serve 'Schmetterling' to my 'Hund'.

I wasn't too sure when you mentioned the idea of a 'tail' antenna but that really works! I rather like your  'fenders' too.

Those 'ear' antennae, however, are the absolute dog's round parts   Half greyhound ears, half dragon's horns!  Love it  :-*

My Stepdaughter rescues and fosters, most recently an injured pitbull named Remmy. Believe me, I know about scorched nostrils...

 apophenia-

I am going to leave the fenders/shields off, at least on this version, but the 'ears' were one of those bursts of sprue synchronicity. I was
looking at the upper works from a Trumpeter 1/700 New Jersey, mainly for 'this looks odd' when I spotted the prop shafts. the forward part of
the 'snout' is some upper works tower, and the tiny bits on the side are from the same sprue. Glad you like the tail/sail=probably the easiest
part of the build so far.

 finsrin-

It could dig holes- its main function is scouting, which includes detecting landmines.

Thanks for the good words, Colleagues!
