Whiff Canadian PT6A powered version:

and my crude drawing of such:

Give it a pair of PT6A-68s and it would be quite the beast (standard IA-58 has twin Turbomeca Astazou XVIG turboprops of 729 kW (978 hp) each whereas a PT6A-68C version would have two engines of 1,200 kW (1,600 shp) each - almost a doubling of power!!!

I particularly like the top profile ysi_maniac - the one with the side-looking radar and A-10 twin tail fun arrangement!! :P
Any chance of a Alpha Jet like gun pod under the fuselage, say with a big bad ass Oerlikon KCA 30mm cannon or even a
Gsh-30-2 30mm cannon or 2A42 30mm cannon ;)

There were actually developments with 30mm cannon:

IA-58B Pucará Bravo: Modified with deeper forward fuselage, allowing the 20 mm Hispano cannon to be replaced by two 30 mm DEFA cannons.

IA-58C Pucará Charlie: Single-seat version with additional 30 mm DEFA cannon supplementing existing gun armament.

https://youtu.be/zGC3oizdMyM (https://youtu.be/zGC3oizdMyM)

It only has 950shp PT6A-62s (same engine as PC-9s) though and not the bigger -68C.

As I'm sure you know the British 'acquired' a Pucara following the Falklands war:

What if as part of war reparations a squadron or two were provided to the RAF as a COIN platform.  Might be interesting to see it in Harrier style scheme operating in Germany.  Maybe add on some additional sensors etc:

Some time ago on a Falklands War anniversary, Airfix released a set which included the Pucara. There's six kits in the box and three of them were reboxed from other manufacturers, the Pucara, the Mirage and the A-4. Got the set in the stash --- somewhere  :-X

Is this a recent modification ?

Is this a recent modification ?

I believe the extra scoop is to provide more cooling air - apparently they have had some issues.

The mods were made in 2015 and the aircraft is now designated IA-58H.

Memory is still good my friend.  Turbomeca Astafan IIs were proposed.  These were turbofan engine developed from the Turbomeca Astazou which in turn was the engine already used by the Pucara.

IA-66 with TPE-331 engines and intakes above the propeller looks to be a fairly direct replacement for the Astazou as both turboprops are direct drive rather than having the PT6A's separate power turbine.  Absent discord with the UK prohibiting obtaining them, I would prefer the Dowty-Rotol prop to the McCauley prop and either to an equivalent Hartzell prop (case of experience with McCauley and Hartzell and hearing good things about Dowty-Rotol from someone with equivalent experience with them).

Pucara and A-10 together.

Give the Pucara a suitable sensor and designator fit and have it scout for the A-10.

BTW, there was also the one-of IA-66 development with TPE-331s:

That looks really smart. I like it.

Been thinking of building an IA-66 using bits from an OV-10 while the Astazou bits from the Pucara go to make a French OV-10 variant.

More on the jet version:

I mean, that pretty much seals a A-10 / Pucara crossover. A-10 with Pucara wings/engines & vice versa-ish.

oh, the A-10 is bigger than I thought.

Pucara with Su-25 wings & engines?

Well, both AModel and RVHP make a 1/72 Beech 1900  ----- could be a good source for engines. Or 1/72 Jetstreams ---

hmm! think on this I will   :icon_meditation: :icon_meditation: :icon_meditation:

A Model and RVHP for engines if you're doing the PT6A-powered aircraft; Jetstream if you are going an IA-66 (though I expect my approach of swapping engines between a Pucara and a Bronco might be less expensive, if not quite 100% accurate.

With all these wonderful profiles I don't think I can build my SH kit as a Malvinas machine now. Bring on the weekend so I can get into it! SAAF or RNZAF are looking good right now...

Greg I had a brainwave, then saw your post that mirrored my thinking:
As I'm sure you know the British 'acquired' a Pucara following the Falklands war:

What if as part of war reparations a squadron or two were provided to the RAF as a COIN platform.  Might be interesting to see it in Harrier style scheme operating in Germany.  Maybe add on some additional sensors etc:

Airframe together, some gap-filling required but decals and weapons are out....

I did read that both Egypt and Iraq looked at the Pucara but there were no deliveries.

Edit Also Iran ordered some. Egypt may have been a Wif, but I read it in a book at the air museum and don't have the reference  :icon_sueno:
