BTW, this could be a conplement of JoseFer's design: a Mirage 2000 with Typhoon canopy.

A dedicated reconnaissance variant seems like a waste of a platform now that there are digital systems that do not require a battery of cameras to image the targets by direct overflight.  Much of what used to be done by the dedicated reconnaissance aircraft can now be accomplished with a video recording device linked to the FLIR and EO systems in the various targeting pods that are now carried.  So you have a situation where any aircraft can be used to perform the ISR mission if it has the right pod attached to it.  Some of the larger camera systems with very long focal lengths that are preferred because of their ability to image targets from outside of the air defense envelope are better off carried in a large pod instead of inside the aircraft due to the physical size.  You see these types of pods on the Mirage F.1 as an example with a very large optical window on the side of the pod for oblique imaging that does not require the aircraft to overfly the target.

I believe Jeff is referring to pods such as the Reconnaissance Airborne Pod Tornado (RAPTOR) pod:

or the related Goodrich DB-110 reconnaissance pod:

You can actually get the RAPTOR in both 1/72 and 1/48:

Sure, this is the practical real world solution...but who cares? ;)

Yep.

If you can find a way to fit the Mirage III R nose to the Mirage 2000 it might work.

Another option might be to kit bash a reconnaissance nose from a smaller scale subject to a larger Mirage 2000 to make it work with a minimum of PSR.

I am still stuck trying to do the exact opposite in adapting a more functional looking radaome to a Mirage IV.  My first attempt was to use a 1:72nd scale F-15 radome on a section of the Mirage IV nose with some material removed to get the diameters of both parts to match up.  This was going good until I started sanding away and the still uncured glue inside was exposed to the sanding process.  It got a bit ugly.  I put it away for a while but it never looked quite right after that so I pulled it all apart and now it sits waiting to be dealt with again.

I'd simply be inclined to give it two engines and leave it at that. It's such a lovely design that I wouldn't want to clutter it up.

Besides, the Mirage IV and Mirage 4000 both showed how good a Mirage could look with a pair of engines.

Mirage 2000 was proposed with two RB-199 engines for European Fighter competition (eventually lead to Rafale, Typhoon) during early phases (when it was called Tactical Combat Aircraft or TCA). It may have been designated Mirage 3000.

Greg's wish for a 1/48 Mirage 4000 gave me an idea:

Mirage X000 heavy fighter/interceptor - using a 1/48 Mirage 2000 and 1/72 F-15 Eagle forward fuselage

The Mirage's fuselage has been chopped in height a bit (about 15cm/6in in real life), so as to facilitate splicing-in the Eagle's forward fuselage. I suppose you could drop it a bit more to give it a more elegant neck line, much like on the actual Eagle, although the more I look at it, the more I like it the way it is. The nozzle was also chopped, meaning it would probably use two engines (as the actual Mirage 4000 did). The fin is still the same size. Viggen-style main landing gear to give it that "heavy fighter look".

Four Matra Super 530D medium-range AAMs semi-recessed on the fuselage? Or use the 1/48 missiles in 1/72 for long-range AAMs?

Cheers,
Moritz

Hello , i was thinking of a what-if profile for the Mirage 2000, of a new model called Mirage 2000 +, a concept similar to the F-20,F-16 Block 60 and the Gripen NG, a Mirage with some upgrades wich would be: a new cockpit with state of the art avionics, capability for new payload, the engine would stay the same since i think its good enough, i wanted to add cft,s however, to increase its range but im not sure thats possible within the 2000 limited airframe space, and so i had the idea of coming here, does anyone have a idea of how we can fit cft,s on the Mirage 2000,s body? they dont need to be everywhere..

I think the Rafale one is better, id try to fit some cft,s on the ''free'' part on the upper surface of the fuselage around the start of the intake.

I was just looking at dams post on the IPMS Pessac show and the first photo has a Tiger Meet Mirage 2000 front and centre that at first glance looked to have Indonesian roundels / pentagons (I wasn't wearing my glasses) instead of French, which got me thinking why not an Indonesian AF Mirage 2000?  In the standard French blue and grey scheme an Indonesian bird would look fantastic, actually I find the Indonesian red bordered white pentagon marking very striking and think they set off many schemes that are nothing special otherwise.

Thinking some more on it (over thinking as I usually do) I was wondering what would see Indonesia flying Mirages, buying new Australian built aircraft, gifted used Australian aircraft, buying straight from France, ex-French aircraft loaned prior to delivery of Rafales, then it hit me, Dutch built aircraft.  My thinking is instead of Starfighters and then F-16s the Dutch instead build Mirage III, F-1 and 2000, exporting examples to Indonesia each major build.

Seriously contemplating a 1 Aviation Regiment Mirage 2000D.

The back story being that army aviation (along with a FAA being formed) was retained post formation of the RAAF (which concentrated on strategic bombing to the detriment of pretty much all else), specifically to cover AOP, army cooperation, CAS and battlefield air superiority.  While there were Corps level aviation brigades and formation level aviation squadrons, the main effort was the divisional aviation regiment each consisting of one or two squadrons of fighters, one or two of dive bombers and one of army cooperation aircraft for AOP, FAC and liaison as well as a flight / troop of tactical reconnaissance aircraft.

Initially the AEF (Australian Expeditionary Force / 2nd AIF) used what ever they could get (the preference being Hurricanes and Henlys) but by the end of the war were flying Typhoons/Tempests and Beaufighters or Mustangs and Mosquitos.  Post war they moved to Furys and Brigands, then adding Hawks to the mix, before moving to a Hunter/Super Hunter  and Canberra/B-57 mix, Mirage F-1 and Jaguar, then Mirage 2000C and D before the Rafale B and C.

So, similar to my own timeline with the RAM's, then, where the RAAF is a purely strategic air force incorporating strategic bombers & interceptor fighters; Army air does as you've said; RAM's air does the same for the Marines; & RAN FAA is mostly ASW, AShW & fleet defence.

In my timeline the Army Air Service begins WW2 with a squadron of Avia B-534's on the books, while the RAM's have a squadron of Sea Gladiators (I know the timelines don't really match RW but I like both aircraft, which are both very similar in performance) ... Mind you I'm figuring the RAM's also have a squadron of hang-about Bristol F.2B's still flying, too.

I was sticking to the concept of the Mirage 2000 derived F-2 still being a replacement for the Mitsubishi F-1 fighter so the F-15J would still be in service.  Of course that could push a drive for some commonality - maybe a F100 or F110 powered Mirage 2000 variant?

Only issue here is with the following timeline:

Mitsubishi (McDonnell Douglas) F-15JDassault Mirage 4000
  • 27 July 1972 - F-15 prototype first flew;
  • June–July 1975 - JDA inspect F-15 as candidate for the replacement of the F-104J/DJ Starfighter and F-4EJ Phantom II;
  • December 1975 - F-15 was announced the winner, with the government intending to purchase 187 F-15J/DJs;
  • April 1978 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was designated as the primary contractor and licensing for the F-15C/D;
  • 4 June 1980 - first F-15J built in St. Louis was delivered to the United States Air Force for its first flight;
  • 15 July 1980 - first F-15J heads to Japan;
  • 26 August 1981 - First of 8 F-15Js to be assembled from components shipped to Japan makes its maiden flight
  • 1981 - 1997 - licensed production of aircraft by Mitsubishi.
  • 9 March 1979 - Mirage 4000 prototype first flew

For the Mirage 4000 to beat the F-15 I believe it would need to first fly at least 5yrs earlier.

I was sticking to the concept of the Mirage 2000 derived F-2 still being a replacement for the Mitsubishi F-1 fighter so the F-15J would still be in service.  Of course that could push a drive for some commonality - maybe a F100 or F110 powered Mirage 2000 variant?
F100 would likely be the best choice as it would require less structural rework around the engine bay as both it and the M53 have comparatively small inlets and rather larger afterburner diameters.  As an alternative, perhaps a pair of F404s to give extra thrust.

Those RAF 2000s look awesome!

Maybe a long term UK France tie up as the UK tries to recover from the 57 White Paper?

Instead of joint projects that often fell apart maybe more a reliance on projects more like the helicopter deal on the Gazelle, Lynx and Puma.  Maybe a Mirage III, Lightning, Mirage IV mix for both nations.

For some reason I love the idea of an RAAF 2000N. One day I'll get around to it.
Still a future idea but I'm very keen to do it in 1/72.

Not like that, but now I want to do that too! Retro scheme for 75th's anniversary maybe?

Anyway, I now have a 1/48 SuE & a 2000C on their way from different parts of the world to enlist in the 1980's-1990's RAN FAA & RAAF, respectively. ;)
