Alvis Saladin (and associated) Ideas and Inspiration

At Fort Knox - woke up at 5 to shave and shit before PT, turned on CNN and the radio. CNN is showing two Kuwaiti Saladin Armored Cars in front of the palace, alternatingly firing down two roads 45 degrees apart at Iraqi T72s.

and predictably, ended badly for the Kuwaiti crews
And as i watched that drama play out for a few minutes the radio was playing THIS SONG while C-130s were flying every five minutes out of Knox's airfield (taking the 197th BDE - I think - to war stockpiles in the Mid East).

Couldn't have choreographed that scene any better than the reality unfolded all on it's own.
And for the last 32 years, I've wondered who those guys in the Saladin were.

I disbelieve. I'm only 17, how can I possibly remember things from 32 years ago!?
More on topic, though, this post popping up reminded me that I had a few ideas for Saladin and Saracen based equipment for AltBC... notably a Saladin with a triple 30mm AA gun; Saladin with twin Red Top launcher; Saladin with twin Skyflash launcher, operated in conjunction with a Saracen-mounted tracking/guidance radar.

Litvak: Are you familiar with the Canadian Army's one-off Saladin with Raytheon AN/MPQ-501? Not quite the same thing as your air defence Saracen - the AN/MPQ-501 being basically a Green Archer counter-mortar radar. But it does show that a fairly large antenna could be successfully mounted on the back of a Saladin.

Do you have other Saladin variants in mind for AltBC? One unbuilt concept that made sense to me was substituting a 30 mm L21 RARDEN for the 76 mm L5. I'm imagining mixed armament Saladin teams - maybe two 30 mm autos firing AP backed up by one 76 mm for HE and HESH?
Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you come up with for AltBC :smiley:
