I have just checked back and actually you did the backstory in December '07, from a suggestion by Deino. I cannot find a profile of a Chinese 'Toom, but I do sort of remember one, (I blame the meds for poor memory and lack of creativness). Anyway appologies to both!

How about something a little more radical than just re-engining? Inspired by the Chengdu J-9, how about a Spey-engined Phantom with the main wings moved back as far as possible and the stabilators (shortened, maybe) as canards?
