the Cigarette Races

(1/1)

raafif:
For some years in Australia, any public advertising of cigarettes on TV, radio, bill-boards, magazines etc has been banned.  From December 2012, cigarettes will only be sold in packs of drab, non-descript colours with graphic health-warnings & barely discernable branding to dissuade smoking ....

2013 ..... after the passing of these new laws on package appearance the tobacco industry fought a short battle to have them repealed.  They then came to the conclusion that, as their sales weren't falling but still (slowly) increasing, they may as well accept these laws as largely ineffective.  Along with Banks, the Tobacco Industry was still the most profitable commerce and they decided that, as any advertising is good advertising, they would invest some money in their traditional promotional area -- motor-sport.

After some negotiation with Government, no-smoking groups & the Cancer Council, an acceptable code for sponsoring racing-teams was re-established.  The major part of this was the limitation on display of sponsors names etc on the cars and driver's / pit-crew's overalls etc. -- this would conform to the same rules as per the cigarette packs themselves.  The rules even applied to other smoking-industry companies such as Brierley Pipes, Lick'em Papers & Smoother Filters.

Most companies naturally pushed the boundaries of these rules to try and obtain maximum benefit from their dollar.  Below is the Marlboro-sponsored entry in the 2013 Bathurst "King of the Mountain" race -- unfortunately for the sponsor, the stewards ruled the display of the race-number to be non-compliant & modified it with a sheet of vinyl so that it did comply ....

In response to their increasing profits, for the 2014 season the government decreed that, for every two cars the tobacco companies sponsored, they had to provide money for one non-smoking team.  Thus that season had Nicorette, Quit & Cancer Council teams also entered with much brighter colours & logos ....
