Japanese tanks and related
« on: March 31, 2012, 06:14:48 AM »
Hi folks,

A site I just stumbled across:  http://gunsight.jp/c/english/Tank&howizer-e-3D.htm

Not sure if these are all real, but regardless, they should provide some inspiration.

Regards,

Yep, all real world, only the 120t Super-heavy is in the realm of a what-if as no details of its
actual appearance seem to have survived.

a couple of nice light AA ones there --- pity so very few people are interested in the odd japanese tanks like the Jungle-Busters & halftracks :icon_nif:  There was quite a bit of strange kit out there if you search really hard enough.  I can see that I'll have to troll thru my hard-drive again & post some here.

that's a nice site but they only list one halftrack (armoured apc).  There were several soft-skins including ones with AA guns on the back too.

Something that you do not see very much of due to a lack of eligible vehicles is this WW2 Japanese Type 97 Te-Ke Tankette Restoration Project

That Japanese super-tank of WWII, it would have had a crew of 11 & weighed 100 tons

 The 100-ton tank proved to be a dismal failure during field trials, as deploying the vehicle was impossible.  The tank sank over a meter into the ground when it was driven off the concrete platform.  The ground at the test location was wet and rather soft; the smallest degree of vehicle rotation caused the tank to dig itself into the ground, and the road wheels to slip from the tracks.

I was just reading how the Type 74 (pictured below) was considered early on by the ADF when they were looking for a Centurion replacement:

Life imitates art - faux Type 95 based on a "modified M5 High Speed tractor as the main chassis and the power train consists of a 454 Chevy V8 Engine backed by a Turbo 400 Transmission, it has a Holley carburetor, electronic ignition and a top speed of 30 MPH."

Ah, that's where:

The Type 74 was considered a very strong contender originally and was recommended for further trials until they received the full technical details and discovered that it had been designed around a max crewman height of 1.68 , considerably shorter than many Australian crew.  the internal volume was also comparatively small.

New Zealand should have fielded a Battalion of them then, what with the preponderance of Hobbits they've got.

The knowledge that Australia initial looked at the Type 74 derives some interesting questions in itself.....
1/I'm under the impression that, until very recently, Japan could not export arms;

2/I would be interested to know how much a Type 74 would have cost, given that Japanese indigenous weapons/platforms are inherently expensive...

3/When compared to other second-generation MBTs, the Type 74 has more armour than a Leopard 1 (122mm and 140mm),

4/You just can't beat, let alone match the Leopard 1-based support vehicle range....

1/I'm under the impression that, until very recently, Japan could not export arms;

I am sure they would have found away around this.  In fact if you look at the Japanese Arms Export Ban, its basis was the Three Principles on Arms Exports which actually stated that arms exports were not allowed to go to:
  • Communist bloc countries
  • Countries involved in or likely to be involved in international conflicts
  • Countries under arms exports embargo under United Nations Security Council resolutions

Which wouldn't have applied to Australia.

2/I would be interested to know how much a Type 74 would have cost, given that Japanese indigenous weapons/platforms are inherently expensive...

350-400 Million Yen (~3.2 - 3.6 Million USD) each is the reported unit price

3/When compared to other second-generation MBTs, the Type 74 has more armour than a Leopard 1 (122mm and 140mm),

But is slower, remembering that the philosophy behind the Leo 1 was more towards speed and mobility than heavy armour.

Thanks for that GTX👍
Yes, you're correct about the philosophies behind each design....the Type 74 appears to be geared towards defence, while the Leo 1 reconn in force.
Given that Australia predominantly using its tanks in the mobile gunfire support role.....

Talking about speed and acceleration of the Leo1, I recall a Leo1 tank commander wanting me to cop an SD16 Lost and Damage (L&D) for damaging the handpiece of the K-Phone on the back of his tank, when as a grunt, I was directing his gun fire onto targets, when all of a sudden the tank accelerated away and I was still holding the handpiece.... After he said I'd be coping the L&D he demanded the hand piece back. To which I replied "screw you mate, you took off without warning and if I'm going to pay for it, I'm keeping it as a souvenir!"
The handpiece still resides in my units Mess and I didn't pay the L&D 👍

I only recently learned of the pre-war Japanese heavies. The Type 95 makes an interesting comparison to the other multi-turrets of the period.
