Title: 5th Element Police Car - Done
Post by: Buzzbomb on March 01, 2021, 12:20:01 PM
Multipass !

My good mate Ian W who is Stargazer Models is still creating models old school method, basic shape, lots of Autobody filler and scratchbuilt parts. None of this new fangled 3D rendering and letting a printer do the work. This is they way short run models used to be made.

I was fortunate enough to get a copy of his latest kit late last year, 1/48 Police Car from The 5th Element. Particularly since a great deal of procrastination has meant that I never really got a start on it, a GB on WhatIf Modellers has given the inspiration to get this build happening.

Somewhere I'd seen a bookshelf diorama with one of these.

Like most short run kits, it is bare bones for the modeller to do as they please.
Some of you may know that the chance of something like this leaving my desk "untinkered" is close to zero.
Lighting methinks, is the first bit of bling.
Open up the windows and prepare the lights.

Uhh ohh.. short run hurdle one, bubbles in the resin. The base part is designed to be wider so this will need to be rectified
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/5thElement/5thPolice_2.JPG)

In my drawer of Electronics is a chaser circuit, I am going to see if I can implement this to give the lights a bit of pizzazz

Since those are white LEDs, if you want to add colored lights use one of the Tamiya clear colors. Works great.

Frank, I planned on replacing the LED's and.... it might just work  ;D

Proof of concept for the Beacon Lights. It is a short Movie so should open up and play.

Of course now I have to fit that to the model, so early days yet.

A good light-hearted SF movie that's worth watching more than once, in my opinion.

Slow progress, the lighting is a bit fiddly, self inflicted of course.

Lights in situ
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/5thElement/5thPolice_4.JPG)

The kit is a prototype so the casting was not first grade, so it is what it is. Under first paint run
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/5thElement/5thPolice_5.JPG)

This link is another video of the lights in action (well mostly, one had a hissy fit and has subsequently been fixed) , so a lot larger so be patient if you want to see it

That looks great, so far! great use of bendy strays for pipework. Is the coreflute gluable with common solvent glues?

Whoa ... that is nice! Lovely build  :-*

Hard to go wrong with that subject material but, I agree with Frank, your "Cobbled up" Corflute and bendy-straw base is truly awesome! Everything about it says "below the fog"

... Is the coreflute gluable with common solvent glues?

Frank: Think of Corflute as an Antipodian Coroplast. Both are polypropylene. I've seen mentions of Loctite and TEC Bond hot-melt glue as working on PP. Another that is meant to work well is Infinity Bond MMA 500 methacrylate.

I only use a hot glue gun, my "go to" adhesive for Cor<insert local name> sheet. Not sure it will last, but it is quick and easy, if damn annoyingly stringy at times.

Pretty nifty! You should take another movie wit the finished dio - the one for the light test worked fine.
