Sukhoi CA-234 Rattler, RCAF
« on: December 12, 2011, 04:19:05 PM »
My first whiff-in-plastic build was a RCN CF-110N Spectre that crashed before I finished it. I still have the model, but some parts are missing, some destroyed, so there's only a small chance I'll actually get around to finishing it.

But, I've since started my second whiff-in-plastic: a Sukhoi CA-234 Rattler of the RCAF. It's done up in RW-ish markings as I don't have the means for the moment to get AltCan decals made.

It's still very much in progress, but I thought I'd share a few pictures...

This is my first-ever attempt at camouflage - and I'm using spraybombs as I don't have an airbrush. I'm satisfied enough with the lines, but too late - after I started decalling - I realised I should've tried to polish the lines down a bit, as the borders between the colours are rather noticeable... ah, well, lessons learnt, right? :)

It's progressing, but slowly. I don't build everyday, and I've got other plastic projects on the go, too, not to mention profiles, althists, Elder Scrolls, writing a conference paper... well, you all know how this goes! :P

Beauty. It's funny though, very much in progress seems to be mostly finished to us amatures ;)

All Tamiya spraybombs - AS-19 "Intermediate Blue (US Navy)", AS-8 "Navy Blue (US Navy)" and I think AS-32 "Medium Sea Grey 2 (RAF)". I say I think, because I've got like to a half dozen different Tamiya spraybomb greys, and I can't recall exactly which it was. Will do me good to figure it out soon though, as I still haven't painted the gear doors... :P

Did you prime before painting? I just put some Tamiya spray paint over some Testors Model master and about 50% of the surface cracked.  :omg-:

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

No, I didn't.

I've generally only primed (in gloss black) if I'm doing an NMF finish, or (in grey) if I'm doing something mostly white.

Though I also do try not to mix paint brands, I did do so on my in-progress RCAF H-34 (Testor's blue over the Tamiya red). I put that paint down three-ish weeks ago, and it looks just fine.

Thanks. For a NMF, which Tamiya colour do you use?

BTW this is great idea. I have the same kit. Hmmm .....

Hmmmm, lemme think here.

I've done two NMF finishes - a HunAF MiG-21PF over two years ago. I think I used an MM for that. The second was my CF-104... I think I used a Tamiya aluminum for that, with a couple of jarred paints for smaller bits like the exhaust and a couple of darker panels. Both turned out satisfactory, I think.

I haven't yet decided yet what I'll use for the RCAF Sabre I started recently.

But short form, I'm still in the experimenting stage to figure out which paint I like best for a bare metal finish!

Additional to TT's question: the third of the camo colours was also Tamiya, AS-4 "Grey-Violet (Luftwaffe)".

I see the old modeling/aviation adage remains true: "Everything looks better with leafy roundels."   Love the model.  On your next one, if you want to get subtle demaracations b/w camo colors, even using spraybombs, you can try using little "sausages" (or "worms"?) of blu-tac or similar product at the edges of your color patterns.

Thanks for that tip, John! I'll give it a try on my next camo scheme.

My aircraft in-progress are on hold for the moment, as we're planning on moving in a month or two, and I think they're safer for transport without gear attached. :P

I'm still working on subassemblies though that are easy to stow safely, still need to figure out how I'll safely transport the finished builds...

Uh, no. It's been sitting in a box on my bottom shelf since we moved. I've looked at it, but haven't really had the motivation to finish it. I may end up using it as a practice hulk once I get an airbrush...
