Eastbourne 3 Wheeled Sportscar Finished!
« on: July 06, 2021, 03:31:06 AM »
This was going to be a 1/35 vehicle based on the Morgan 3 wheeler:

I took apart the Zvezda 1/35 M-72 hoping that the BMW engine would look OK, but it's too small. The Morgan front end and engine looks complicated and I didn't want to go down the rabbit hole to try and copy the structure. Since I couldn't find a good, large (1/24-1/35) motorcycle engine (and didn't want to design one) I modified the vehicle. It looks a bit like a cartoon car now, but so be it.

I kept the Zvezda M-72 wheels, since there are three plus a spare. For the engine, headlights, some of the interior and the body frame, I'm using the blue hot rod from the Lindberg 1/32 Show Rods I tried to hide as much of the steering linkage in the elliptical structure under the radiator under the excuse that this makes it more "aerodynamic"

The body is sized to the frame, except for a little bit that sticks out the end (which I'll cut off)

The instrument panel may not make the final cut, but I can make it a center drive or right, left hand drive

Most of the detail bits will be added after printing. Some details (like engine cooling side vents) are missing from the model and will be added.

Rhino 3D has a nice "artistic" display mode:

I called it the "Eastborne" because it's the first model I've designed/built at my new place. Hopefully I'll be able to get it done in time.

I actually looked to buying one of those a few years back.

I like the Morgan, but for $60K+, I think I'd want something slightly more practical!

This car will have a pretty big engine. I need to get all the chrome off of it, though.

Peter Sellers drove a Morgan in "The Party", which is a hilarious movie for the first 3/4:

The EV3 looks very cool. The range isn't too bad considering it's basically a three wheeled motorcycle.

Top Gear wasn't impressed with the gas powered Morgan, but it may have been the weather:

Nice idea !
I had thought of building something similar, to use up some spare parts, but I wouldn't have time to get it finished in this GB . . .
Be interesting to see how this turns out.   8)

cheers,

Yep, me too.  Except, lacking spare parts, Frank's Eastbourne has prompt the gathering of random pixel inspiration.

Fortunately, mine will be a sideview ... which makes not succumbing to the evil temptations that EV3 grill and offset headlight so much easier!

I've been tempted to go back and redesign the front of mine...
I'm getting a new printer (a Saturn) this week, which should print about 2x-3x faster... but I'll have to set it up (it's much bigger than my current Mars Pro). So if I print with the Mars Pro this weekend, it'll take about 6 hours to print (barring disasters). If I wait and use the new printer, it'll take a few hours to set up but it would only take a couple of hours or so to print (fail quicker and more often!)

Here's the latest. I bent the radiator, but not as much as the EV3 since there are structures I need that get in the way of the fancier view:

The engine will be the one in the Lindberg 1/32 "Super Roadster" - some sort of V-8.

I like the new grill - I was going to suggest something like a  Morgan version of the Cord front end, but the wave front is pretty nice.

(fail quicker and more often!)  - I may have to steal that as a new shop motto. ;)

I was going to incorporate some Cord features, but just couldn't wrap my brain on how. I even tried adding flip up headlights; I may try that as an option.

The first test print was not great, but good enough to test fit. Considering that I haven't designed or printed anything since Feb. , I consider it a not-failure. I've redesigned it as a single part body (instead of three) and it's printing now. I may not be able to finish this before the end of the GB.

Front view. There was some damage to the grill when I removed the supports:

I had to cut down the engine (it's a four cylinder now). I only need the bottom half:

I may have underscaled this. Here's a trimmed down 1/32 seat. It looks OK, but this definitely a one person vehicle:

Frank: If that's the 'test shot', can't wait to see the real deal

Love the new hood and grill. But, as you say, definitely a single-seater  ;D

A little road damage? A few stone chips in the bright work?

I changed the name slightly - it's now Eastbourne

This latest print came out well; better than expected. Fresh from the wash, but before fully curing - the one piece body, with the "cockpit" included:

Front end, also a single unit. I went with Cord style flip up lights:

Held together with tape and blue-tack (white in this case). The headlight is from a 1/24 kit; I forgot to print the one I made. It may be a little too big. I have a smaller headlight I can substitute:

Detail on the hood emblem/radiator cap. I'll sand away the printing artifacts (although primer will take care of most of them):

It looks like this:

Side view - Blue is plastic, black wheels are from the Zvezda kit. This is a great resin - it's a high resolution engineering resin and pretty strong; fully cured, it's tappable. Not that I'm going to thread any bolts into this:

With Nigel (but no seat):

This is more like an adult's go-cart:

Still to do is make the instrument panel and steering wheel (although I may go with a yoke; the Lindberg kit's steering wheel is ridiculously small) and prime the printed parts and sand away the printing artifacts.

Frank: Hopes were high but this is gob-smackingly-good

Love the flip-out headlights (Cord was always a favorite). Good call on making your own steering wheel (or yoke). A teensy steering wheel would look out of scale on a cycle-car.

Not something that I could get into but really impressed with what you're doing with the printer! 8)
