Title: Steampunk Corsair for Biggles
Post by: TerryCampion on September 23, 2012, 10:31:53 PM
"Biggles Follows On"...features an RAF Corsair, during the Korean war, dropping Biggles in NK. It's a 2-seater (which I WILL build) but first I'm doing a single-seat escort.
Academy 1/48th F4U-4B....cheap and easay to build.
The fuselage is together and I've begun building the extended engine.
The wings are together....4 x 20mm cannon plus lots of stores.
Should be fun.

The wings and fuselage were joined last night with a perfect fit. All rubbed down today and I'll continue building the engine....the really fun bit!! Oh I'm enjoying this....I think I'll need to write a suitable back story, about "super-engines" hand-built by a dedicated corps of engineers.
 ;)

Well then...construction continues...more tomorrow, but I'm thinking of adapting this sort of scheme. It won't be RAF, but one of "the baddies" aircraft....just need to sort which one....but I have identified some.

RAF participation in the Korean War was limited to Sunderland units operating from Japan, and exchange pilots serving with the RAAF (Meteors) and USAF (Sabres).
The Army used Auster AOP.6 aircraft for reconnaisance and spotting.

The Army units often had RAF pilots and maintenance men attached, and when one unit was based not far from Seoul, itself not far from the North/South divide, a number of the groundcrew, formed from a National Service sextet of men recruited from Arkwright's Engineering Co.Ltd, Bilston....they sought something "extra" to occupy themselves. A redundant, damaged,USMC F4U-4B was "bought" for the usual price....several cases of whiskey....from a USMC Sergeant, and work began. Gradually, an incredible sight appeared from the hidden depths of the main hanger. A totally rebuilt "Corsair" was displayed, with an extra-powerful engine attached to the forward fuselage. New cannon were fitted and extra weapon pylons were attached underwing.
It was with some tripidation that the pilot, Flight Sergeant Eric Cheadle, taxied the aircraft out for a test flight. Apart from some difficulties due to the extra power and long nose, the new "Corsair" was a success. A repaint took place and an all black scheme was chosen for night missions. When viewed, however, it was decided that adding a grey/green upper-surface would be better, and this was done to the upper surfaces and some of the fuselage.
Bombs were scrounged, bought and stolen from the nearby USMC base to enable occasional flights to take place. 25 missions were achieved before the groundcrew deemed it unsafe for further flights after an accident taxying.
Also, a 2-seat version was built by the same unit.

Just about finished adding pipework and bits.

I'm probably a little "unusual" in that this time I've added EVERYTHING to the model except the prop and transparences. I could add the prop, but I'm inserting something metal which I want "natural" before the actual prop.
So not only the airframe, but stores and pilot will be painted "in situ" after I've primed the whole thing in black.
I once watched a figure painter achieve a superb effect even though the entire figure had been constructed. So working on the premise that "anything he can do, I can do too.....or better", I've used that approach a lot over the years.

Spray priming today :)

A cannon has dropped off!!
How very dare it!!!
All primed otherwise....I'll superglue the offending cannon, after checking the others, then proceed.
The bounder!! >:D >:D

Hope you're feeling better.  So, after all these years, Mid still hasn't shown you how to operate a digi-cam?  Hint, hint (please?)

The photos of the Biggles "Steampunked" Corsair, known as the Vought-Arkwright Blackbeard 1. The photos were taken through the gusset of a secret agent's knickers, hence the poor quality, as the aircraft is still on the "Secret" list.....even the "List" is a secret.

COOL.  I'm not sure what the finish color is (metallic, gray, blue?) but it looks good.

Black undersurfaces and nose, fuselage and wing uppersurfaces with dark grey and green.
All extensively weathered with metallic shades on the nose and some drybrushing elsewhere, together with detailed washes in black.
