SturmMorser Maus
« on: April 28, 2021, 11:16:01 PM »
Another project that languished for my terror of track work - this is the 1/72 Dragon Maus that I started sometime in the 'aughts. I decided to
make it a dedicated 'Urban Assault Vehicle', swapping out the 128/75 combination for a 38 cm RW 61 and a pair of 30mm Mk 108's in remote turrets for AP/AA work. Discovering that the casemate for the Porsche Elefant was the same as the Maus turret, albeit not quite as tall, I grafted that to the back, and trimmed down some Evergreen tube stock to make the sponson bases. The RaketenWerfer was scratchbuilt from plans found
in one of the George Bradford books. (I thought about just picking up a Trumpeter kit, but was stubborn and cheap. Still think I did alright.)
And this was were it has sat for a few years now.

I spent an afternoon finishing the bogies, and tacking the track into place. (A lot more robust than the E-100.) I don't know if these are the
'DS' type or not, but cyano seems to hold them together well enough.

And then I started on masking. I'll take some pics of the paint-in-progress and the sub turrets in a day or two.
(Sorry about the focus. The macro setting on my little Fuji is a little wonky.) Thanks for looking!

Doc, this actually makes a whole lot of sense and a very plausible weapon fit for an E-100 chassis

Both tanks are looking good! The paint job looks great.

The Maus tracks remind me of the non-fun of the 1/35 Maus

Thanks, friends - I think the paint came out ok - still on the fence about adding another layer (large black areas, sort of keeping with the dazzle
theme) but I think it looks ok so far. Here's how she looks with the masks off and the subturrets on..

What about brick red, like British Berlin Brigade AFVs?

I decided to leave well enough alone with the paint. The modest (and wholly spurious) unit markings settled nicely over a thin gloss.
Here, with camera deciding to focus properly, is the basic base. I'm thinking of a street scene, craters in concrete, etc.

I decided to go with a vaguely 'Concrete Redoubt' look for the base. I have  knocked together a B.A.D.* for the wall, and will probably put together a couple of inset ladders or something, along with a couple of vision ports by the door, maybe an MG position or two. Like the E-100,
I should be finished by the coming weekend.

Nice and natural. Everything works to my eye on this build, great colours and really convincing fitout with the larger mortar. It is a natural for this type of vehicle.
