XP-51V Vertistang
« on: November 21, 2020, 03:04:39 AM »
Hi All

This ones going to be a challenge for me as its going to need a vast amount of accurate cutting, not like my cut and shut style of modelling.

Here's the inspiration courtesy of Tophe, I had a word with him on WhatIf and he is happy for me to plagiarise his creation.

by Robomog, on Flickr

I'm going to build it slightly different with no rocket engines but with two piston  engines driving contra-rotating props, the placement of the oil cooler and tail planes may also be different but you get some idea of the project.

I'm using a pair of these

by Robomog, on Flickr

and here is progress so far,  just trying to work out the cuts as to add another engine I will need to extend the fuselage both front and back so as to balance out the weight and maintain the centre of gravity
(sortof  :D)

Gonna be a slow project.......

Measure once, cut twice! Or is it measure twice, cut once?

Interesting project! What are you going to use for the two remaining tail fins?

Thanks for the comments guys

Eric: Thanks

Finsrin:  gonna try and be accurate but I can see it degenerating into  bodge and filler

Frank: I've taken both tail fins off so that I can centre the tail, I will probably use the four tailplanes with a plastic fillet

Kitnut: wow never knew that one existed !

Hi all

Finally committed to cutting plastic, but it hasn't gone to well partly my fault, partly equipment.

The vertical cuts with the razor saw went swimmingly but the horizontal cuts went awry due to an out of kilter cutting disk resulting in a very rough and wide cut on  one side, I finished the other cuts with a sharp knife but the results weren't pretty.

Here's the first cuts

by Robomog, on Flickr

I originally intended to invert the rear engine but this would have put the exhaust stacks virtually on top of the wing so it was redesigned to be back to back, unfortunately I then realised the engines were too close together so I had to part them and add a spacer between the two which became a bit of a bodge to make them line up.

Here's a the story so far, and a quick mockup to make sure everything is going in the right direction.

by Robomog, on Flickr

by Robomog, on Flickr

I used both engines so that I could line up the exhaust stacks, the rear engine will be faired into the body with filler. I will need to add a bigger air intake and will relocate the oil coolers probably under the wings.

This is a case of "yea I measured it carefully, but still managed to screw it up" you can always hide a lot of mistakes under a layer of filler tho  ::)

Thanks for looking

Hi all

Made some progress, the rear fuselage has been reunited with the wings. I was originally going to fashion and fix  the rear fins before i carried out this operation but found i had no reference points to line them up properly so i have decided to just cut the slots and leave the fins till later. This will also allow me to align them and also  adjust the undercarrige  so the aircraft is properly vertical.

by Robomog, on Flickr

You can see the gash made by the faulty cutting disk ( yea, yea a bad workman always blames his tool !) The other side is a little less violent

by Robomog, on Flickr

Still undecided where to put the radiators/oil coolers, will probably leave them in the tail

I'm thinking wing leading edge radiators like the Mosquito had might work for one engine.  Been scheming a Ki-64-II with a mix of radiators like that, rather than evaporative cooling in the wing, and a combining gearbox driving one large multi-blade propeller rather than two contra-props.

Hmmm leading edge radiators would work nicely, leaving the original for the other engine, unfortunately I will have to reinstate/rebuild the intake duct  doh !

My intention is for the  propellers to be contra rotating and have one engine each.

I also have to add a second air intake for the rear engine,  maybe I should have done a little more groundwork before I started  :-[

Maybe its the contra-props, but this made me think of the paired radiators of the Fisher P-75. Always liked the look of them.

Or just use the spare fuselage you have there ----

There was a number of British projects that were designed to have tandem piston engines with each engine powering one of the contra-props, the rear engine was mostly set a little higher in the fuselage so the driveshaft would pass through the 'Vee' of the front engine.

Hi All

Another milestone crossed, a good deal of the PSR on the fuselage is done and the nose is attached.

Leaving it now to let the glue dry thoroughly, then it's back to PSR  to bring it all together

Tail construction next.

Hi all

Major PSR on the nose is virtually complete, I'm still finding the odd pin hole or depression in the filler and it will need its final sanding to eradicate any sanding scratches but to all intents and purposes its finished.

Did I say tail construction next, I lied. I have started on the tail planes but I decided to get the radiator/oil cooler duct in place first.

by Robomog, on Flickr

As you can see I have adopted a design as suggested by Apophenia using some plasticard tube and a spare Hawker Hurricane  radiator.

{sigh} more PSR

Hi all

The radiator/oil cooler array is almost complete so I have started on the tail planes. This is going to be tricky as every thing has to line up so that the wheel cylinders are upright

Hi All

Now that the Police Apache is complete I can get back to this one.

The tail fins are finished as is the radiator/oil cooler intake. I was hoping to mount the wing tip wheels last but soon realised that I had to attach them to the tail fins in order to line every thing up (this has been a constant theme throughout this build). These are all attached now and it is time to construct the tail assembly.

by Robomog, on Flickr

The top fin is in place, I am going to let this dry thoroughly  so it will become a template to line up the other three fins.

When all this is done it will be time to find out if it will sit on its tail as intended (audience gasp :o)

Tune in next week folks...............  ::)

Thanks for looking ....
