Airship Ideas and Inspiration
« on: February 04, 2012, 12:57:41 PM »
Hi folks,

Since Brian has got us all turning our sub models upside down and into airships, why not a dedicated thread.

To start with, here is one I did a while back as an Airship "corvette".

Regards,

Greg

Interesting concept an interceptor type airship. Although this sounds like a slip to ancient naval tactics, a combat airship might be better to have a ramming staff at the nose and tail, tipped with a mine. Maybe one at each compass point. Even if not used as intended, they would deter the opponent such a strike.

Could be an interesting thread, what if no airfoils and everything is strictly lighter than air. Certainly would have made nuclear delivery outside of bounds...

As long as we're toying the idea of racing large things, what might come of a thread on airship races, a lighter than air world-round speed classic?

More ways to get chinese sub kits out of the water....

Mod Edit:  Moved over from B-36 thread as it seems more appropriate here.

How about combining the basics of an airship with lifting body aerodynamics?

Further to the Airship Aircraft Carrier idea, what if other nations got in on the game:

Germany:

Italy:

Japan:

Britain:

A few days ago I suddenly got an idea for an airship, a modern one that is.  It started after I received a full set of Airbus A400M props from someone on the ATF forum, and my first idea was to use them in a contra-prop configuration on something.  Looking at them they look like something you'd find on the rear of a submarine, then I thought -- what about an airship !!! They both have the same shape.

Since then I've expanded on that and got to thinking how I would do a really modern airship using today's materials (or materials of the not to distant future).  A while ago there was an article I read about having an AEW airship which could fly really high and stooge around for a very long time, well I'm thinking along the same lines, but instead of the traditional 'blimp' style you usually see, what about a disc shaped one.  Or one that looks like a 'Flying Pancake' but instead of tractor propellers, have pusher props on two sides.  My thoughts are a very large shape like this with contra rotating radar dishes in the center, with crew quarters above and the operations deck on the bottom.  The dishes would rotate around a central vertical shaft which would have an elevator in it to get from one deck to the other.

I'd have the outer shell made from a multitude of hexagonal tubes made from Nanofibre joined together like a honeycomb only the tubes running more or less horizontal, which would be inflated with helium under pressure to maintain the shape and the radar dish area would also be flooded with helium. The top and bottom decks would have their own livable environment inside the outer shell.

Powering all this would be four of the Europrop TP-400 engines, each driving it's own propeller, but like how the Double Mamba engine powers a Fairey Gannet. As I mentioned above, the props would be on the outside rear corners.
Then there would be a fifth TP-400 to power all the electrical needs.

This Russian metal (clad) airship was designed so that it wouldn't need a hanger while on the ground.

How about one shaped linke a lifting body to get some useful lift from the fuselage?  If you did this and were just a tad bit heavier than air on the ground, you'd have more stable ground handling.

Yes, and if it followed the Flying Pancake airfoil, it should be good for some really slow flying speeds.

I'm thinking of copying the Hasegawa kit shape only making it somewhere around 36" across in 1/72 scale

  Something like this ? ...

  Your idea inspired me!

The main difference I made while drawing is that instead of a rotating antenna, the entire lower half of this Lenticular airship is paneled with dielectric and the radar is thus scanned in phased array, much like the large ground based BMEWS radars. The upper half of the envelope is covered in spray-on solar paneling. This would not generate enough power for the main radar but could operate the life support/climate control  equipment and lighting. The 5th engine APU idea you have is incorporated.

I added a self defense armament and satcom antenna dome. The engines are ducted/buried.

This basic craft could make a very-long-range airliner/world cruiser or executive transport or a great science platform, it could carry a far larger telescope higher into the stratosphere than the currently debuting SOFIA airborne observatory.

Inspiration for Brian ....

someone on the other site mentioned ......
"Shackelton fuselage under a small airship envelope: a lumpy, bent one with random ropes and bits of net around it."
May I add .... twin-20mm in nose & tail, singles in mid-upper & sides -- all gun-stations to be open as per WW1 practice.

below ...
The bomb is an incendiary type.
The other "bomb"-shaped item (in the IWM, London) is a pod for an observer.  It was lowered down thru clouds on a cable from the Zeppelin -- the cable on this one must have jammed, so the observer climbed up the cable & it was then jettisoned.

Ralph Currell's paper models are very nice and, best of all, free.

The Vickers Transoceanic Airship with top-mounted passenger cabin is interesting:

2016 .... due to the cancellation of the BAE Nimrod upgrades & the scrapping of the aircraft, Britain was left with no real maritime patrol options.  The attempted influx of illegal immigrants (from Africa via France) by innovative means forced the MoD to re-think their options on border-patrol.

It would take several years to even put the Nimrod back into production so other ideas were explored.  One was to fit the fuselages of Avro Shackletons under dirigible envelopes.  Remaining fuselages were retrieved from scrapyards, museums & RAF gate-guards -- they had extra openings in the side for gun-stations and nose, tail & mid-upper turrets were opened up -- all were fitted with either single or twin 20mm guns.  Initially no propulsion was provided, the blimps being towed & held on station by destroyers.
the Mod's latest "aircraft" became known to crews as Shack-Bags ....

So interesting.  Way cool topic.
To model a larger one like aircraft carrier, could do 1/350 or 1/700 to keep size reasonable and can use the aircraft in those scales.
Got lotsa room - try 1/144

There's not a lot of data in the story, but the airship of Rudyard Kipling's "With the Mail" would be an interesting subject with the portion of the car that was interchangeable and lifted into place just before departure.

The City of Glendale the Slate all-metal airship:
http://tropicostation.blogspot.com/2012/08/a-zeppelin-over-glendale-and-ill-fated.html

http://articles.glendalenewspress.com/2010-10-13/news/tn-gnp-grant-20101013_1_airship-hangar-santa-ana-winds

The airship was to be propelled by a steam-powered nose mounted 'blower' that was supposedly
going to create an area of differential pressure around the airship thus lubricating its passage
forward, not surprisingly it didn't work. A small engine and propeller were kluged into the back
of the gondola to provide forward motion.

maybe with WW1 anniversary coming someone will do a Zeppelin control-cabin in 1/72nd & 1/48th ?  Accessory kits could be an engine pod with propeller & an observation "bomb" with crewman climbing back up the rope.  Someone is already doing a kit of the proposed Seimens-Schuckert wire-guided missile in 48th.

The Captain Harlock / Queen Esmereldas one looks sufficiently different to be interesting... but I'd lose the pirate sailing ship hanging underneath. :))

Possibly 2 would be sufficient - one for an airship, one for a spaceship. ;)

To be honest, I'm not sure what the airship/spaceship dividing line is with that one, but it comes up on a websearch for "airship" and it's the right shape, so.....

Man, I am still kicking myself for not buying that refurbished version of the Hawk Graf Zeppelin for about 1/3 retail when I had the chance. There are times when SWMBO should not be obeyed.  :icon_sueno:
Still want the Queen Emeraldas starship too, with a few mods to make it an Earth- bound (sky-bound?) airship. I'm not willing to pay the current inflated "collector" prices for one, however.

Has anyone read the Temeraire  series of books by Naomi Novik? Basically dragons are real and they are big and they are used as flying rigged warships in the Napoleonic era, with crews and weapons.

This has been discussed several times at WhatIf and basically there are none, now currently in production, Greg.  Most were vacuforms but are long gone by now.  I know of a USN blimp made by Combat Models but apart from that, not much else, except the aforementioned injection moulded stuff.  I am also aware of an early Zeppelin in resin (I assume the envelope is vacuformed) but can't lay my hands on the link at the moment.   I could see a market for some enterprising modeller to make barrage balloons.   Some interesting post-war UK radars were going to utilise them to gain height.

Probably…though it starts to get expensive.

Further searching turned up these options - not saying any are easily available though:

Last one is 1/700.

Then of course there is always this technique (click on image for more details):

I built the Intrepid back in the '70s and frankly to get a good result you'd
probably be better off wrapping papier-mâché around a party balloon. The
netting is moulded to the multi-section balloon body and none of it fit very well
or aligned well.

 :-\

Never mind that it's 1/57th scale and sometimes gets silly money on the used market.

This had me revisiting a suggestion MAD made to me before about a retractible AEW balloon that could be simpler and cheaper than even a helicopter-based AEW platform.

Would the fact that the balloon would be tethered unlike a helicopter (that can reposition itself) be a factor in how large the balloon and its radar would need to be to match the overall effectiveness of, say, a Sea King AEW?
Forget about his bow and arrows- why wait until that sparrow has done his deed when I can just bury him right now 'cause I'm sick and tired of hearing why he wants to have his way with the cock robin!?

What must be factored in, when using a tethered balloon to lift an AEW system aloft is the weight of the cable.  Obviously the more cable, the heavier weight that must be lifted to reach a given altitude.   While attractive because of their "cheapness", the weight and the cost of the cable quickly adds up and while it may be recoverable if you lose the balloon, the question has to be asked if its worth it when it means you must build a ship big enough to carry that much cable, plus service the balloon, when a helicopter or a fixed wing aircraft are smaller, cheaper and much lighter, allowing a bigger AEW set to be carried aloft.   Alternatively, you could of course utilise an airship, which is a good compromise between the two sorts of aircraft...

Found on Facebook. Translated from the French text:

Artist's vision of a giant ship project, mi direct (half dirigible), mi bomber (half bomber). This 1951 project was supposed to be able to transport a row of atomic bombers to enemy territory. Finally, the Air Force has settled for less gigantic and more realistic projects.

Bombers look to be B-57-ish.

Very interesting concept of a hybrid Airship/Aircraft

I have read a sci fi book (Torch of Honour) where the antagonist forces have a large "Carrier" which is a starship, but uses the hydrogen fuel tankage as extra lift for when it enters atmosphere.
Of course working out how it was destroyed becomes a bit obvious.

I was thinking about the announcement from Tacoma of these two:

And was wondering if there are any equivalent scaled British airship kits available.  Possibly a 23-class airship one?

It could be interesting to ponder the scenario of airships fighting each other - the dogfight of whales...  would be a bit like sailing warships fighting each other perhaps.

My favorite big balloon, the Kirov airship from the computer game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. I've been thinking of scratch building/3D printing it in 1/72 scale, which would be roughly a meter long. Never built anything like this before though, I'm thinking of either 3D printing it in large ring sections & then bolting them together, which would use up a lot of printing material & be very heavy but also very strong. The other option would be to 3D print an internal frame & then cover itwith papier-mache, it would be a lot lighter & cheaper but more fragile & messy to make.

What about 3D printing the 'pokey' bits to apply to a vacuformed gas bag? You'd get the strength of the 3D printed material without quite so much weight (or the fragility of papier-mâché surfaces).

Mind you, a metre-long envelope is getting into industrial-sized vacuum-forming machines  :o

Yeah I've seen the paper model, there is also a resin kit, a kit made entirely from photo-etch & a several 3D printed model available. They all have accuracy issues & are too small for my needs/interest though.

Photo-etch

looks like I started this idea back in 2015 & started the model in 2021 with slight progress in 2022 ... but I now have the very light blue paint for it.  I'll probably go for German markings.
