Title: FV215 Heavy Tank Destroyer 1/35
Post by: Buzzbomb on May 28, 2021, 02:26:22 PM
For reasons that now escape me, I purchased this, the Amusing Hobbies FV215B Tank Destroyer packing the 183mm gun system.
(https://www.britmodeller.com/reviews/amusinghobby/35/35a008-fv215b/boxtop.jpg) thanks Britmodeller

It is a British 50's paper project for a change. The kit is average for current expectations, A+ for subject matter about a C for moulding and detail quality. A lot of missed opportunities for detail areas and rather average instructions.
Another plus is that the tracks are indi links click together, well for a while anyway, they are a bit flimsy, so I would recommend gluing them once you have them in place as the teeny, tiny protrusions tend to break off with handling.

Over a couple of build day meets, I have cobbled it together, all in all, out of the box

One thing is for sure, it is a monster compared to the Matilda I also have on the bench. Again

Both builds are looking good, BT!

I'm thinking you bought it because it was such a cool, different subject ... Same reason I bought a Conqueror, which came out at pretty much the same time. 8)

Yesh, what a brute! For some reason I thought the gun was fixed, but I may be thinking of a different vehicle with the same gun.

Keeping with the theme, its bench buddy, also in stage one paint and decals. I am now calling these two Zig and Zag

Nice! But what a bruiser! It looks like Zig could readily carry Zag around as a spare  :o

Thinking about it a bit, the Self Propelled 17pdr, Valentine, Mk I, Archer is, probably, a more likely direct ancestor of the Tank, Heavy No. 2, 183 mm Gun, FV215 via the Tank, Heavy No. 1, 120 mm Gun, FV214 Conqueror.

 ;)

The bench buddy is almost there as well, crew and a bit more detail painting

Random fact about this kit :P Amusing Hobby directly copied the FV215 design used in the game World of Tanks. However the FV215 in World of Tanks at that time was very inaccurate, the shape of the turret, upper hull & most of the small details were wrong. The World of Tanks 3D model has since been updated to be more accurate but the Amusing Hobby kit is still based on the old inaccurate version.

WoT Old

The most obvious difference between them is the shape of the turret front which is rounded on the real one but hard edged on the kit.

BTW I'm in no way trying to be a rivet counter & diminish Buzzbomb's great work, I just thought I's share the interesting origins of this kit's design.
