Hi All
Back in the saddle and doing something i get great enjoyment from.
I was in McRons having a veggie burger and with my mum and Mrs Lady Mog when both of them caught me fiddling with the plastic top of my McCoffee.
"I recon i could make something out of this" i said
Mrs Mog gave me her 'he's off again' look then to my surprise she called my bluff,
"go on then" she said " go for it and make something"
So Here i am.
It took a while for something to formulate but the brain cells finally collided and i now have a design in my head.
Here is the collection of starting parts, i may not use them all.......
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4885/45343514065_cf69d25100.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2c5RmZg) (https://flic.kr/p/2c5RmZg) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
You can probably guess what its going to be, but i will tell you, its going to be a 50's style flying saucer to transport the little green monster in the middle of the photo above.
I've named him Monty. He was my lucky charm given to me by my late father in law and was with me through a number of cars until i got T-boned three years ago. I found him in the odd bits box when putting this project together and was a perfect pilot for the design.
The first problem i noticed was the letters engraved in the caps so i had to cut the center's out and lose all the circular details. On the plus side i discovered that the clear lid Fromm the top of a '99' Cornetto fitted almost perfectly in the opening and made a perfect canopy.
Below first parts coming together, three of the cd protectors have been stuck together and the edge sanded to a profile. The bottom body has a piece of plastic stuck on and trimmed to cover the embossed letters. The top body has had the center removed and a trial fit of the canopy.........

Made a trial fit of the parts and found Monty sat a bit low so i created a platform on the bottom body ........
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1963/45343511245_1cb2595a23.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2c5Rm9D) (https://flic.kr/p/2c5Rm9D) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
It is fixed with gel superglue and i found a novel way of keeping the pressure on the parts until it set.....

Also started on the undercarriage and controls.........

I love GBs like this because I can never figure out where things are going almost until the Big Reveal.
You really found a nice collection of objects and I'm going to enjoy watching your progress.
I can only applaud your discipline at not draining the ale before the parts set.
Me, I have no such level of self-control.

This is going to be great!
Nice group of parts.
-
If you'd kept the outer 6 x press-button-thingies, you could have had an "alien" control panel. ;)
-
Fantastic project Mr. Lord Mog, nothing better than a Black Sheep Ale to keep things smoothly going!!!
;)
-
good project. Looking forward to this one.
-
-
Thanks for the comments guys.
Brian - The Beer was not there long, gel super glue is quite quick to dry.
Old Wombat - may use the press button thingies to decorate the outside.
i'm currently in a quandary as to weather to trick it out with engines and a nose or keep it simple in true 50's style, currently leaning towards the latter at the moment.
Mog
>^-.-^<
-
I'd go with the 50's B-movie style. Paint with a simple shade of silver and you're done.
-
Diggin that you foresaw this starting with the lid. So few McCoffee lids that go on to be part of something greater. Love 50s style in aircraft, cars, and flying saucers.
-
Thinking of decorating the space ship something like this
Although kericks suggestion of the all silver finish is now creating some pull, thoughts ?
Mog
>^-.-^<
-
Until this post, I would have definitely said "Silver!" But few things say 1950s like two-tone turquoise and white (or pink and grey)! Love the idea!
-
That does look very good! You would have to include some chrome parts.
-
Yup, envisage some chrome parts, hoping to recreate those eyebrow style lights in a pod either right at the front on the disk or either side of the upper body, rear lights also, possibly around the canopy and the undercarriage legs, may be more, depending on how the build morphs.
It's already changed considerably since my first plans and I've only just started the initial construction. ;D

Hi all
Got a bit more modelling time and made some more progress.
As I said previously the engraved text became a bit of a problem which is very evident in the photo below ..........
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4838/32472115128_f6bd5472d3.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Rts5vW) (https://flic.kr/p/Rts5vW) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
There is also a ridge around the edge of canopy which needs to be covered so to kill two birds with one stone it's out with the circle cutter (an absolute life saver on this type of project!) To manufacture a cover plate to hide these problems.
Trial fit looks good ........

Also started on the internal detail, constructing the sides of the cockpit.....

Hi all, more progress at Mog Towers,
The control panel is complete and will be detailed after painting.........

The base casing has had some futuristic bumps added using ex pill packets, also the engine array has been assembled and shown placed in position in this photo it will be properly stuck down when the casing has been sprayed ...............

Monty has had his steering handles attached and some stretched sprue pegs inserted in his feet to attach him in the cockpit. I'm waiting for the glue to dry here before trimming the sprue
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7844/32646709548_d837dd3f1c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/RJSVmy) (https://flic.kr/p/RJSVmy) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
Incidentally Monty is two inches high, so if he is six foot high in "real life" that means the model roughly equates to 1/35 scale quite a departure for me from gods own 1/72 scale.
Work has started on the headlights, I'm using the ends of some pens and inserting the ends of the ink barrel here to give a fifties feel, I'm still trying to work out a way of making the eyebrow detail..........

Beautiful details Mog, can't wait to seeing them on the model!
:D
-
That green monster delights me to no end, mog!
Thanks for the smiles and for the continuing play-by-play.
Brian da Basher
-
Now, judging Monty to be roughly 55mm tall, I've calculated that in 1/72 scale he is approximately 396cm/12' 101/2" tall.
Let's just make it 4m/13', much more fun that way. ;)
-
Hi Old Wombat, in 1/72 scale Monty and his space ship will be huge, I will do some comparison shots with Arthur Brain in my next post.
Incidentally I've just noticed that Monty is in a slight crouching position, so my scaling is a tad compromised ...... ??? ::)

Hi all, more progress
Cappuccino One is now in the spray shop.
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7861/45795792564_c0de519773_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2cLPpCq) (https://flic.kr/p/2cLPpCq) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
And the alien controls are nearly finished ........
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4840/44749085220_d1a438803d_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2bbjL15) (https://flic.kr/p/2bbjL15) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr
Note to Old Wombat one of the button thingies did become an alien control.
And another pic for Old Wombat, This is Monty and the base of the space ship set against Arthur Brain, Arthur is six foot high in 1/72 scale which makes Monty massive in that scale ! .......

Getting close to final assembly now.
more when it happens..........
Thanks for looking.

Hi Mog, I love this more and more!
Will you repaint Monty?
Antonio
:-*
-
Hi Andonio, Monty will remain as is, he shows up well in the cockpit when the canopy is on
Mog
>^-.-^<
-
That's why I liked the idea of Monty being 1/72! ;)
Why should an alien be 6' tall? Why can't he/she/it be 18' tall? ???
-
Fair comment OW ;)
Perhaps I should sell this one as "scale as applicable, measure to taste" ???
Mog
>^-.-^<
-
Fair enough. Aliens should be as tall as needed!
But why is Monty playing diamond maracas? :) :) :)
The Cappuccino is coming along great. Love the cockpit details!
-
Hi Antonio,
"Diamond maracas" LOL ;D
They are Barbarella style control sticks, they will be linked to floor boxes during final assembly.
Mog

Well if you like your monsters big !
This is Monty against the prospective crew for Cappuccino Two at 1/144 - 1/150 scale,

Perfecto. Belongs in flying saucer model "Hall of Fame" :-*

I definitely LOVE IT!!!!!

Please tell Monty that he is welcome to drop by my house anytime in his awesome Capp One.
-
It looks great! The headlights and dish antenna at the rear really add to the model.
-
Thanks for the kind comments Guys, you have made a boring old fart very happy :D :D
If I get some time I will do some scale shots.

Hi Guys
During the build some of you reckoned Monty would look better at smaller scales so as promised
"Scale to Taste"
This is Monty at my intended scale approx. 1/32 - 1/35 with soldier for reference, apologies didn't get him painted...…….

I think Monty has a promising career in TV/movies. Spaceships and aliens tend to vary in size! Great looking model!

That's me every day. You should see me wander around after going down to the basement to get something! Typing on a keyboard would be a lot easier if someone would stop rearranging the letters.......
Love this build. I picked up several coffee cup toppers to keep in the drawer of spare parts.

Good one.

Cappuccino builds are both superb in their respective approaches to flying saucer enigma.
Envision each featured in diffferent episodes of new X-Files series.

One of your most delightful builds yet, Mog!
Gotta go with 1/144. Towering over lesser life forms for the win.

It can be, if you look upon the design parameters of the director & the deadlines as challenges, rather than as inconveniences. I admit I probably couldn't but it'd be fun to have a go & see how I went. ;)
