Something a bit odd for me, a VSTOL design light transport.
Was challenged by a fellow aero artisan on Deviant' to try a design. There are a lot of these out there, from Moller skycar to the Osprey's, here is my kitplane idea. Its as ugly as I am, but utilitarian to the nth degree. Runway, water , even WIG performance.
This is probably more on the lines of a passenger or cargo van and is not as low cost as originally desired. But this will fly in 3 modes- An aircraft, Flying boat amphibian (amphibian means that it can run from water to land without anything more than a ramp or flat beach) and as a WIG craft or ground-effect or ekranoplan machine.
Using ducted fans each driven by 200hp recip or rotary Wankel engines, the first two with their wing can tilt from zero to 60 degrees, the drawing shows 45.
The orange forewing acts also as floats for amphibian landings. The red wings are fixed and provide the most of the lift, making this a Canard design. The yellow wing and green fans mounted on them are moving parts, the after green ducted fan is fixed for forward thrust. The body in blueand the clamshell nose in violet.
I was not interested in aesthetics, just economy, utility and safety (uses a ballistic chute for the entire craft) and adaptability. In terms of looks- its a flying dumpster.
There is room to seat 10, a cargo ramp in the back and the nose opens in a clamshell like the Republic Seabee or the Waco Hadrian gliders.
The design should evoke similarities to many others as this is very prolific both in real and what-if designs. Some familiars will be the Moller Skycar, the Fairchild Hiller VSTOL designs of the 1960's and the V22 Osprey, plus AirHogs RC toys and even Movie flyers like the Samson and C22 craft in Avatar.
This is a well thought over and debated corner of aviation.
Back to the drawing board, I got a new flying wing and a racer in mind !
