Anti-Tank Missiles
« on: July 05, 2012, 06:13:01 PM »
Hi folks,

Does anyone know if there is a kit (preferably in 1/35) of the Israeli Spike missile?

Regards,

Greg

Given the lack of ATGWs in 35th scale beyond the usual TOWs, Milans & Russian weapons, I'd say no.  That said, it doesn't look that complicated from a shape point of view & some careful scrutiny of the spares box should reveal parts to make a decent enough replica.

There are a couple of TOW ATGM shapes included in the one AFV Club Stryker ITV kit that has the TOW turret.  Not sure if the Trumpeter kit has this included or not but having the AFV Club kit here in hand I was surprised to see the missile shapes included since these things are usually just a blur when seen in flight and good luck trying to model the guide wires trailing out of the back end of the missile.

If you are keen on modeling the SPIKE, I would suggest finding the dimensions for the missile and then look for something of suitable length and diameter to use as a stand in for the missile.  This could end up as just a plastic rod shaped to resemble the SPIKE or maybe a couple of similar size in diameter missile shapes glued end to end to get the desired length.  Considering the fact that the missile in question is not normally seen outside of the sealed launch tube you might be able to get away with using a MILAN, HOT, Dragon, or TOW launch tube with different end caps to get your desired results.

Does anyone have any good references for the Malkara missile?  (see below)

Also, does anyone know if there were any Commonwealth ATGWs before the Malkara?

It is also the only ATGM which was transformed into a SAM.  It had a comparatively massive warhead and was huge for a system intended for airborne use.   Not many MBTs, let alone heavy tanks would survive a hit from one.  Quite expensive too, by all accounts.  The only kit I'm aware of is in an odd 1/40 scale by a Japanese manufacturer (Bandai?) from the 1960s.

Adams did a series of 1/40th scale armour kits in the fifties and Revell did some aircraft.
It isn't really an 'odd-scale' as it was/is a common scale in aerospace and engineering.
It actually would have made a sensible standardized scale for vehicle and aircraft models.

Something different:  The Hungarian 44M dupla panceltoroveto (Buzoganyveto - "Mace"):

I seem to recall these featuring in one of the Red Gambit series of novels.

One that I wouldn't mind modelling one day - the MGM-166 LOSAT.  It was proposed/came in multiple formats of launcher:

I cannot find the existing thread on this vehicle.  I thought these drawings would be of interest:
