Random space & Scifi ideas and inspiration
« on: February 26, 2012, 04:48:11 PM »
Hi folks,

A thread for your random space and Scifi themed ideas and inspiration that don't really fit anywhere else.

To start with, here is a MiG Space fighter concept I found on the web.

Nice find man!

Here's a space freighter design I came up with awhile back.  We had to re-design the cast of "Firefly" for a concept art class back in college so I had re-do the ship as well  8)  I envisioned it as 700' long  container ship surplus from the Colonial Navy.

Yes that's very interesting.

I had some ideas alnog the same lines myself about a logical spacefighter, but not so well developed.

I remember his pictures from when I was a teenager. Whenever a space ship was being blown up there was always a body been flung into space...

Heh - nice one! You could see a TV production with a limited budget actually cobbling that Space Cobra together out of scrapyard bits: similar things have been done for real.....

Exhibit A - The infamous "Rapier" from Wing Commander:

(The "Broadswords" in the same movie were cobbled together from Canberras)

Exhibit B - The equally infamous "Medical Shuttle" from Firefly:

It's not actually a "real" Hind, it's a 2/3 scale fibreglass model originally build to sit in the background of some war movie. The engine pods were made from dustbins, and wern't even straight from one side to the other. Unbelievably, a group of die-hard fans have bought this thing to restore: now I love Firefly, but to me this is just about the worst example of sheer lack of budget and time showing thuogh badly on screen......

the Lightning looks good no matter how you cut it up :)

Never seen a pic of the Broadsword -- I did google it once with no joy, only knew about the movie from a thumbnail pic in an old Flypast mag :icon_nif:

Any good pics of these spacefighters online ?

Knew this reminded me of something:

From the old Rogue Trooper strip in 2000AD.

I also hold that this design was the inspiration for the Republic Gunship in Star Wars: they took the basic idea, but then made it Hind-based instead of Cobra-based.

Do I need to provide proof of my sincerity every time I post an image on this site? This is kind of boring!

Not entirely sure what you mean by that, but if you thought I was criticising you in some way, then rest assured I wasn't. Your idea just reminded me of another, different idea: that's all. :D

No, you don't. And nobody said you had to. Weaver simply stated your design reminded him of a design he'd seen somewhere else. By saying that he didn't accuse you of stealing, copying or questioned your sincerity in any other way.

Nothing That's New

Same seven notes and some slag poet's quotes
Stick them together with glue
You can mix a fine cocktail from memories
And pretend what you're drinking is new
But there's nothing that's new under heaven
(Chorus)
There's nothing that hasn't been done
Pour me another double cliche
You can't write a song that's never been sung
Everyone's stealing from someone
Burglars get burgled as well
There's nothing that's new under heaven
There's nothing unique over hell
There's nothing that's new under heaven
(Repeat chorus)
You can't write a song that's never been sung
You can't write a song that's never been sung

Chumbawamba

Chumbawamba NOTHING THAT'S NEW

Now I have to say that while I love both Moorcock and Mathews, that isn't my favorite picture of the Ice Schooner. My favorite is this one, although I might be slightly biased by the fact that my mother copied it as an exercise when she started painting, and my auntie then copied it asa painted china plate, which now hangs on our wall.

Sorry: I couldn't find a bigger image on the web.
