If they'd gone for the mechanically-coupled lift fan design instead of trying unsuccessfully for a gas-driven lift fan and then defying the competition rules by replacing it with a separate lift engine, the McAir proposal would've probably been chosen over Boeing's for the JSF competition.

I love this alternate history and the background work on it.
