Title: YF4H cannon positioning
Post by: Jonesthetank on September 05, 2020, 01:55:01 AM
Hi all,

I am not a Phantom expert, so I am hoping that someone might know the answer to this question.

As McDonnell refined the F3H-G/H into the YF4H-1 Phantom, the USN opted for an all missile armament and 4x20mm cannon were deleted from the design.  Does anyone know where they were supposed to be mounted, wings, wing roots, fuselage?  My limited Phantom library only indicates they were deleted, but not where they were supposed to have been!

Thanks

Mark

Based upon this McDonnell F3H-GH mockup, I would say the fuselage:

Especially when you compare with the F4H mockup:

Actually, further checking in Tommy Thomason's excellent book:

Reveals a drawing showing a F4H with guns pretty much positioned as above.

What is interesting though is that the preference was moving away from 20mm towards 30mm cannon.

Hmm!  Not a lot different to the F-101A ---

That's very interesting GTX, because I was leaning towards suggesting 2 x 30mm cannon in place of 4 x 20mm cannons, as the metamorphosis of the YF4H into a carrier-based interceptor (prodomantly a bomber killer) would mean the 30mm cannon would have much greater destructive power....Also, as the Phantom II became more multi-role, these same 30mm cannon would also be far more effective against ground targets....
