Hi folks,
There are a number of GBs possible this year. In order to provide some clarity (and to allow for a little pre-planning), I thought it might be useful to have a "whole of year" look. To this end, I have created a draft calendar for the GBs of 2012.
Please note that this GB Calendar is not "set in stone" and I am certainly not locked on it. As such, I would appreciate your feedback. Do feel that you are able to disagree.
Proposed GB Calendar for 2012:
1 Feb - 31 Mar: "Anything Goes"/"Strut Your Stuff"/"Introductory" GB - Currently underway
1 Mar - 1 Apr: "April Fool's Day" GB - proposed GB for very subtle whiffs aimed at fooling people that they are real. Completion aimed for April Fool's day.
2 Apr - 14 Jun: "30yr tribute to the Falklands War" GB - matches the dates for the war back in 1982
15 Jun - 31 Jul: ??
1 Aug - 19 Sep: "Pirate" GB - timed to end on International Speak Like A Pirate day
1 Sep - 28 Oct: "It's the end of the world as we know it" (also includes WW3 and Post Apocalyptic builds) - timed to end on the 50th anniversary of the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis
1 Nov - 31 Dec: "Clear Your Workbench" GB - a GB for you to finish already started builds, including from earlier GBs
I look forward to your thoughts. Please do provide comments where appropriate.
Regards,
Greg

yes please!
dont forget that a lot of people are not just building on here and there are GB's happening on other forums (ive got 3 starting March 1st! :o ) so any help knowing whats happening in advance is a bonus to co-ordinating it all ;D
-
Sounds good to me 8) iv never taken an active part in theme builds elsewhere but kindv looking forward to doing so with a fresh start on here, gives me an excuse to complete some models too >:( (ah i didnt realise that was an angry icon, just saw the whip, hehe!)
cheers, Joe

Of course the "End of the World as we Know it" GB will probably get an extension taking it to the winter solstice of 2012, and we all know what that means...... ;D
Looks like a good plan to me: hope I find time to do more than look at it!
I'm particularly glad to see the resurrection of the Pirate GB, since I have at least two ideas for that which I'm steadily collecting bits for... ;)
-
I love it! Just need to find something to fill the 15 june -July 31st gap. :D
-
looks like at least three I could get into-and thats plenty to keep me occupied. I like GBs, but I'd feel weird trying to take part in every single one of them.
-
"15 Jun - 31 Jul: ??" means nothing decided for that slot? If so, I vote for Cranked/Uncranked ;D

Yep, that slot is vacant - I figured we might vote on what goes there closer to the date. So feel free to keep offering suggestions.
-
Suggestion for empty slot.
Builders pick of airplane, ship, tank/vehicle that looks to be functional (airworthy, seaworthy, mobile on land, etc) but is of definitely less than a desirable configuration to spend defense dollars on and go to war with. Is armed, can fight, but we really should have got something more desirable for our defense dollars.
Wild ass ideas: Forrestal carrier w/o catapults (cheaper) so operates mix of prop fighters (Tigercat, Bearcat, Corsair), Appache/Cobra/other helicopters, Harriers, V-22, O-2, OV-10, A-1..... might have a few 40mm quad guns removed from scrapped WW2 cruiser; were already paid for and they can shoot.
SAC B-25 carries one half recessed ALCM and equipped for IFR. Plus under wing jet pods???
F-15 with OV-10 engine added to each wing for shorter takeoff.
M-48/60/M1 tank hull with turret mounting two 75/76mm type Sherman tank guns and 37mm turret on top from Grant or Stuart tank.
Things that can go to war but are likely to result congressional hearings before they have to.
-
How about resurrecting Weaver's Batman GB?
-
It's not really in the vacant slot, but US Marine Corps Aviation celebrates its 100th birthday on 22 May this year.
-
Folks,
Please post your ideas for new GBs here (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=49.msg7694#new)
As to the gap to be filled, I was proposing to run a Poll on it probably in late April/early May. I am sure people will have many new suggestions by then so we will try to capture all suggestions.
Regards,
Greg
P.S. Please vote here if you haven't already done so - the Poll closes in another day or so and I would prefer everyone has their say. Remember that GBs are for all members regardless of the format of your modelling.
-
Folks,
Given that no-one objected, I propose that this calendar stand for this year. If anyone is seriously opposed, please speak up or PM me.
Now for the next job at hand: I am keen to hear from volunteers for GB Moderators. Please either post here or PM me.
Regards,
Greg

Folks,
The proposed "30yr tribute to the Falklands War" GB is scheduled to kickoff in a few weeks (2 Apr). I am especially keen to hear from volunteer(s) willing to moderate it. Please either post here or PM me. >:(

Folks,
So far I think things have been going well (except for my stuffing up in getting the April Fools GB going on time...an excellent recovery by JP though!).
Anyway, you will note that we do have a void of any GBs for the 15 Jun - 31 July period. I am keen to know what members would like to do here. We could simply leave it empty and let people focus on non GB work...or even start preparing for the followon GBs. Alternatively, we could run a poll with some of the ideas suggested in recent months and choose a GB theme to fill the slot.
Please let me know your thoughts.
Regards,
Greg

For the void... this year IS the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812...
-
More details please? What would the specific theme/ details be?
-
I would vote for "land" Cars, tanks, planes, artillery, IFVs, APCs, figures, etc.

Ermmm... no idea? It just came into my head. Not sure what one could do with that, apart from timewarping or "War of 2012" or whatever sort of thing.
A maybe more workable idea I just got? "Build something from someone else's universe" or "Build someone else's creation"?

15 Jun - 31 Jul: ??
Can I participate, even moderate this GB? 8)
-
Sure...just provide a theme that a group of people can agree to.
Here's one suggested by the ?? Bit...a "Black Projects GB."

At this stage, I don't see a GB happening in the 15 Jun - 31 Jul timeframe unless we get some interest or suggestions ... >:(

Black projects/ under the radar/ stealth
Since this GB has snuck up on us like an F-117, why not make the most of it??
Stealthy aircraft- Old Gen (Horten wings? Stealth '109?) New Gen (What does the near future or deep future hold?)
Just plain black!! Also included in this GB is the color black. Do whatever you feel but the color theme is black, and should have a majority black finish.
Just plain secret-- Whether it is Australia's secret F-14 Tomcat Test Program or Benin's camoed space shuttle, it's all welcome!
So you can make a stealthy something and paint it white, or a non stealthy, something and paint it black, or just something completely secret and unseen in your own little whiff world.
Get a good if not odd range there I hope
Any Takers?

If that doesn't work for anyone:
Propeller build. Props seem pretty simple usually.
Or Pacific War. (coincides with ARCs PACAIR build but with our unique twist)
Yes I will mod these. However I have never been a Mod before so kid gloves!!
-
We will soon be looking for a Moderator for the "It's the end of the world as we know it" GB (1 Sep - 28 Oct). Any volunteers please PM me.

Just a reminder for folks that the last planned GB of the year is the "Clear Your Workbench" GB - a GB for you to finish already started builds, including from earlier GBs. It will run from 1 Nov - 31 Dec and is a good chance for anyone who may miss out on meeting deadlines for earlier GBs or for simply giving you the impetus to complete a project.
-
That's a great idea! I'll get in on that to finish up my stalled projects!

Yikes! Looks like I'll have to pick something to stall on.
This is the down-side of being so bull-headed nothing is left incomplete, no matter the challenges.

That is like complaining you have "too much money!" ;D
-
I think we can be fairly relaxed with the entry requirements for this one...
-
Well I do have a few projects stalled at the moment, this might be a good oppotunity to get at least one of them completed, Work permitting though I'm sorry to say, extremely busy at the moment ----

Folks,
I should also say that this GB will be in need of a Moderator. I will be unable to since I will be away (and potentially out of contact) from 10th Dec - 10th Jan.
-
I'll moderate it. My life might be a bit hectic but I think I can manage it.
-
Good man! :)
-
I can participate with about a dozen entries too ;D
