Two interesting bits to report on today:
Miniart 1:35th scale Soviet Heavy Infantry Wepaons And Equipment (Kit number 35170) (http://militarymodels.co.nz/2013/08/04/and-then-new-from-miniart-soviet-heavy-infantry-wepaons-and-equipment/)

Wikipedia PTRD/PTRD-41 Anti-Tank Rifle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTRD)
The PTRD/PTRD-41 Anti-Tank Rifle champbered for the 14.5X114mm cartridge looks very nice and has a lot of potential for other projects that are not historical in nature. All of that bare metal is just begging for a special telescopic sight of some kind or maybe a rail system with several bells and whistles mounted on it.
Maybe we will see some other anti-tank rifles such as the Solothurn S-18/1000 20mm ATR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solothurn_S-18/1000) some day soon in a kit like this. We can only hope :)
MiniArt has also released another interesting figure set under kit number 35094, 1:35th scale Soviet Naval Troops (Special Edition) (http://militarymodels.co.nz/2013/07/31/new-from-miniart-soviet-naval-troops-special-edition/)

Several of the figures are plain enough to be converted without too much effort to other roles, limited only by the imagination :)

I wonder how good those AEC armored cars were in real life. That Mk II has given me an idea for a US Army desert raider vehicle idea.

The new Panzer III.B looks very highly detailed (click on pic for more info):

Statement from Miniart:
Dear Modelers and Customers, as you may know our country have faced many problems this year.
Situation in Ukraine and particularly in Crimea forced us to relocate business to the capital of our country - Kiev.
All facilities was transported successfully and we were able to keep all our key personnel.
Right now MiniArt is in reorganization period but it's planned to restart all activities in nearest future. We are already preparing new models for release and soon will announce what these models are.
We would like to thank all of you for the concern and support in these difficult and full of changes time for our company.

For their sake, as people, I'm glad they have moved successfully & safely.
Now, I just hope that Russia's Ukrainian Sudeten gambit fails to achieve what Germany's did.
-
I've been wondering about this happening with some of the Ukrainian and Russian manufacturers. I wonder long before sanctions affect supplies of A-Model kits, for example?
-
A-Model is also a Kiev based company.
Sudeten gambit? Seriously? Christ, would people please stop trying to make historical
events fit current events. History does NOT repeat and the continual attempts
to force fit the current and the past just makes the situation more confusing.
Yes, learn from the past, but don't use it as the lens through which one views the present.
-

Agreed!
Folks, a warning: I will not tolerate a full blown discussion regarding the rights/wrongs of the Ukrainian Crisis. I only reposted the above note from MiniArt so as to pass on information that may affect your modelling. It was not an invitation to debate.

Really? Thats a relief. I honestly believed they were Russian. I wouldn't want the modelling world to run short of A-Monster kits which I continue to aspire to! ;)

Glad to see that a plastic kit of the T-44 is coming out. It looks like it is going to be pretty nice as well.

FINALLY! With all the prototypes and "paper panzers" on the market, the T-44 is one I'm surprised that has been over looked for so long. Glad to see an injection molded kit in 1/35 is on the way.
-
T-44 is now on sale.

New variant:

-
Glad to see the "M" announced although the early model is sufficient for my needs at the moment. Looking at the parts breakdown of the first kit, it would probably take the rest of life to finish it anyway! ;D
-
A list of the features you get for those parts (from the MiniArt site);
HIGHLY DETAILED MODEL
WORKABLE TRACKS
WORKABLE TORSION BARS
FULLY DETAILED FIGHTING COMPARTMENT INTERIOR
V-44 ENGINE INCLUDED
A lot of those parts will be the individual track links. ;)
-
All those features are great if you have the time and interest to devote to the subject. I'm at a place in life where I need well engineered and relatively simple kits (say like current Tamiya armor) rather than "each subassembly is a full model kit by itself". The attention to and level of detail in these T44 kits is amazing but it also seems overwhelming to me in my present place in life.
I still want one though.... ;)
-
I just wish more kits included "FULLY DETAILED FIGHTING COMPARTMENT INTERIOR", even if you don't always get to see much of it. :(

I looked at the instruction booklet for the first version of the T-44 kit and it looks like you can build it without the interior details. The only drawback is that the hull is made up of flat plates. You would probably need one of the of the interior bulkheads to firm up the lower hull. So it's not Tamiya level simplicity but it also isn't Bronco level, where you have to assemble tiny PE and plastic parts that are critical to the construction and stability of the model.

The Modelling News has a full review of the T-44 here (http://www.themodellingnews.com/2016/04/video-review-miniarts-t-44-soviet.html).

-
I was wondering when we'd see the early T54s in injection moulded plastic.
-
Is it the tank with interior, or just the interior? I ask because the box does say "iNTERiOR (something, something) KIT" in the top right corner. ???
-
@Guy,
Maybe this will help:

Cool! 8)
I wish more companies would release their armour with interiors either as part of the kit or as a separate boxing, as Meng did with one of their Bradleys, which gives builders an optional made-to-measure detail set which is much cheaper than most resin upgrades.
-
I'm thinking a T-54-1 would look very good in German marking as part of a '46/'47 scenario. Once could also model the one in the Red Gambit series.

Great minds think alike. ;D
-
I was thinking nearly the same thing with a T54/55 hull and a modified M41 the turret, maybe throw on some zimmerit. And if I we're really ambitious, I could try German running gear.

The one thing that would make those figures look even more Russian/slavic would be if one of them was squatting. Maybe wearing a tracksuit.

I wouldn't be in a rush to buy it, one of the local IPMS guys is building it for an IPMS Journal
review, he's a very experienced armour modeller, and he feels the extreme parts count (56 sprues)
is pointless overkill. The full interior being nice and very well moulded/detailed but hidden when
the kit is finished. He did say that a simpler, lower priced, version of the kit is to be released.

Something that could make an interesting addition to a diorama:

Is there a 1/35 Type XXI?

Perhaps a diorama of just the upper portion above the waves? That would be a lot easier to scratch build.

There were versions with a partially and fully enclosed glazed canopy as well - I'm sure Miniart will release them if not included in the first release.

The fully enclosed cockpit V2 and V3 types would require a completely different fuselage.

The 1950's Soviet Tank crew looks very depressed. "Yes Commissar, we will not drink the anti-freeze because we can't find any vodka" But there is one Slav that is almost squatting, so this set is legit.

The kügel would not work for Dakar or Baja, the lack of suspension makes it a non-starter.
You’d go nowhere fast in in even the mildest terrain, in loose sand it’d just dig itself a hole.
The only place it’d somewhat function would be on a dry lake bed, flat hardpan, or wet, compacted
sand. Otherwise, fuggedaboudit.

Okay then, Bonneville Salt Flats it is. Contender for fastest mono-wheel vehicle :)

So I'm looking at the wheels in the frame use for exploding the mines and I thought they looked really familiar. Then it came to me, a tool I used to 'dress' grinding stones when they got too grooved or gouged (I'm a steel fabricator by trade), the wheels are exactly like that ----

The box art shows one of the failings of this design. The narrow width means that as soon as the right "training wheel" falls into that water filled ditch, it's going to keel over on that side, crush the wheel supports on that side or at least twist in that direction. It looks like turns are made by locking the training wheel on the turn side (rather than slitting the main tread and locking one tread of the other to turn), so damaging a wheel would be bad news.

@Frank - perfect fodder for alternate history - post-war motorcycle enthusiasts. Imagine this thing with a more open body, the armor and weapons stripped away and some Brando wanna-be wearing his leather cap, jacket, and riding chaps with a set of aviator style sunglasses :)
-
Jeff - I'll look at my kit, but I think it would be possible to just build the exterior as a "tank" and use the interior assemblies (or most of them) as a circular motorcycle. The Modelling News build article (http://www.themodellingnews.com/2018/11/in-box-construction-guide-pt-i-miniarts.html#more) would suggest this is possible.
So not so much this:

but this:
It would still need an exterior wheel or track.

The odd motorbike ... Oh, sorry! ... sidecar buried up to the handlebars in honest, proletarian, Soviet mud.

In this case, a BMW. The T-60 had a 70hp engine. Even without a turret, it still had an armored hull to push. An old Fiat 124 has more horsepower!

Huma made a 1/72 Trieb. It was a pretty nice kit (most of their kits were enjoyable to build).

One of the silliest concepts ever. :-\ ;D
The ramjet propulsion cracks me up, how fast would the wings have to rotate
to enable the ramjets to function properly? Plus they'd pretty much be on or
off, slowing down for a landing would be interesting.
;D
-
Jon - they were supposed to use Walter rockets or an engine of some sort to spin the wings fast enough to ignite the ram jets. I guess they could adjust the thrust by adjusting the fuel flow, but that sounds iffy.
What would happen if one of the wings gets hit by a .50 cal while in flight? Or a bird hit?
-
Reminiscent of those plate spinning skits from the old timey television variety shows except with wings and fire :)
-
From what I've read recently about ram jets, even though they can be fired up around 200mph, there's virtually no thrust. To get any sort of decent thrust it has to be going at Mach 3. Apart from that the prop/rotor wouldn't work very efficiently at supersonic speeds. Also the centrifugal forces the rotating prop/rotor would be under, I don't think there's materials nowadays that could be strong enough, let alone a country that didn't have any strategic materials they could get their hands on at the time (from what I've been reading about German jet engines of the time).
But then I'm like Jon, I just don't like all this Luft'46 stuff.
-
Balancing the rotating wing would be critical, and keeping
it in balance would be difficult, never mind if one of the jets
flamed out.
;D

Is it just me or does one of the characters in this latest kit look like Hitler? Maybe an appropriate alt history where he gets a more appropriate job as a baggage handler:

The baggage handler guy has a very unique looking moustache ...
-
I think people forget that Hitler's moustache was, actually, quite common amongst German ex-servicemen of WW1, as it allowed their gas masks to seal properly (unlike the long handle-bars preferred pre-/early-WW1). It was a distinct feature of his but was not unique to him, even before he came to power.
-
Yeah, I know it was a popular style but you have to admit he does resemble Herr Schicklgruber just a bit
-
I think he does initially, but the more you look at him the more he doesn't ? At least to me, weird ?
The young lady holding the "o.k. to depart board" has a slightly odd looking expression as well.

The ramjets will trace a nice bullseye for gunners in planes ahead and behind the plane. Plus the issue of landing the thing - it's already going to be almost impossible in the daytime. I can't see it being easier at night!
-
The hobby shop I work at has had a very difficult time sourcing MiniArt kits. The one supplier we dealt with that was carrying them never had the full line and is dropping them, and one of our major suppliers was listing them as "Coming Soon", only to get frustrated at MiniArt backing out of any kit sales to them at the last minute. Again. Seems like the manufacturer is a tad erratic to deal with.
Oh well, we'll try to find another supplier for them.
-
I would have preferred to see this latest version done as a two seater which would have opened up a trainer possibility.
-
Just another of those desperate pie in the sky projects as far as I can see -----
-
I think this is a 100% Miniart creation. The "real' Tribfluegel never went beyond a wind tunnel model and I haven't seen drawings of anything beyond the standard model. The boxart looks like it's supposed to be a Neptun radar. There probably isn't enough room in the nose and cockpit for the electronics.
-
It baffles me that none of the napkinwaffe kits ever feature the nearly ready for service Berlin radars, just the Lichtensteins.

Because the antlers look cool! Obviously more radar-y than a dome. Or a dish in a dome.

Blame it on Artistic [Napkin-Waffe] License.

Hey, at the end of the day they are in the business of selling kits. If this is what sells, then so be it...

Yep, tells us more about the broader market than the manufacturers.
-
I bought one - the real Triebflugel model, not the unworkable fantasy night fighter.

A diorama with one (or more) of these being "liberated" by Allied troops would be something different.

Have we finally achieved peak German kit? :P

Give it a good radio set and you've got a good start on an airborne observation setup.

Soviets did that, with their versions. They even took them to war against the Japanese and the Germans (for a short period until they all got shot down).

Give it a good radio set and you've got a good start on an airborne observation setup.
That's what the French did with their Lioré-et-Olivier built Cierva C.30s, the Armée de l'Air
had taken delivery of 52 by the end of 1938, used by Artillery Observation "flights" (squadrons).
the Navy had 12, primarily used for torpedo tracking trials during firing exercises.
On May 9, 1940 the Armée de l'Air had 47 on charge: 22 with five observation flights, 25 in storage.
The Navy had thirteen: nine with squadron 3S-2, 2 in reserve and 2 at their Autogiro school.
Focke-Wulf built roughly thirty C.30s under their Cierva license, all on the private civil register.
-
I could see a neat little diorama of a German C.30A in camouflage alongside a Panzer I or II either in France or perhaps North Africa being used in an Army Cooperation role. Maybe even do an Air Ambulance version with carriers on either side for a patient.

The French giros saw limited use after the invasion because the type was not suited to a mobile war -
too slow, too vulnerable, the German's wouldn't have faired ant better. As to side panniers, really a
no go for several reasons, the biggest being the drag on the underpowered airframe and handling
problems caused by the panniers. Which wouldn't be good on what was actually a fairly twitchy design.
A single AVRO Rota built C.30 was fitted with floats and it was a disaster, for the reasons stated above,
and, no, simply increasing engine power isn't a solution with the type, nor is increasing size as all of the
larger giros built in period were abject failures, most not being able to leave the ground and suffering
from major ground resonance issues.

A captured one being tested by the Allies post war would be interesting too I think.

That work platform would be a nice kit without the rest of the kit contents.

Definitely! Good "tankage" is hard to find in the necessary sizes. This looks to be a very fine assortment of tanks.

Just a dumb question, but why would the USSR Triebflugel have Soviet stars as 'kill' markings ?
Also, the serial on the British version is 'VF-306' (with a dash). Someone should call Macross Command, and tell them we've found their lost Veritech Fighter . . . ;D
cheers,
Robin.

Just a guess but those kill marks might represent the number of Soviet pilots lost trying to land the damned thing!

Nothing unusual about the Russian/Soviet craft sporting red victory stars. This was standard for the Russians as they hated the NAZI Swatsika and preferred to show their victories as red stars instead on their aircraft.

Also to keep bullets, fragments and ricochets out of the turret as the MG was pretty much
just stuck through the opening on the turret.

Funny thing is that of all the German WWII tanks, I find the Panzer IV the most attractive (odd thing I know). I find Tigers and Panthers more boring.

The "Lulubelle" was the name of the tank in Sahara, with Humphrey Bogart as Sgt. Joe Gunn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahara_(1943_American_film)) and " Lulu Belle" in the 1995 remake with Jim Belushi as Sgt. Joe Gunn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahara_(1995_film))
DEF model made a Jim Belushi version of Sgt. Joe Gunn (http://www.missing-lynx.com/reviews/figures/defdf35014reviewbg_1.html) and it really looks like him. The main figure in this set look more like Belushi than Bogart.

And you see that bridge over there? I built that, took me two months, through rain, sleet and scoarching weather, but do they call me "McGregor the bridge builder"? No!
And you see that pier over there, I built that, best pier in the county! But do they call me "McGregor the pier builder"? No!" "

"Hanomag" is a colloquial name for the Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track, but actually the name of the company that produced the half-tracks (or parts thereof, AFAIK) that is also famous for their agricultural tractors (just like Lanz).

Maybe a Japanese post war 3-wheeler where the rear wheels were driven by the engine, but the the engine on the Tempo was mounted on the front wheel and it was a direct drive. The rear wheels were unpowered... so it would have been a very, very slow 2/3 track.

This sudden splurge of Stug kits makes me laugh. One of my club buddies has spent the last decade buying every Stug variant/Manufacturer tweak aftermarket kit to build the definitive Stug collection.
Total completed models produced out of this collection of kits and aftermarket = 0
Now nearly every one of these variants is out in injection kits.

I hope this is only the first in a range of WW1 Brit armoured cars & trucks ?
The Seabrook with 3pdr gun & folding sides and various Talbot, Packard & Isotta-Fraschini A/cars would be interesting - as would the Garford.

Can't put my finger in it, but for some reason I think these are really cool. Something about the long wheelbase, short overhang at the rear and twin wheels on the rear axle.
Whiffing ideas: ECTO 0.5 ;D

I've lost count of how many Stug Ausf.G kits Miniart have released, I'm really hoping they'll also make some of the earlier versions in the future.

I'm really hoping they'll also make some of the earlier versions in the future.
I've still got a few of the old DML kits of the early StuGs.
-
I have two of Dragon Ausf.F kits, they only come with a basic interior for the fighting compartment tho. I might get one of the Miniart Stugs & kit-bash it with a Dragon kit to make an Ausf.F with a full interior.
-
But you have to cut it open to see the insides!

MiniArt appears to have chosen to ignore the often seen but never heard street mime from this interesting set of human subjects.
-
Mimes, like clowns, are pure evil.
The guy in the back with the straw hat only needs a ukulele and he's ready for some chap hop.
-
Lord Vetinari has the right place for all mimes...
The SKORPION pit!!!!! >:( >:(
-
This guy would be a really appropriate mime/clown for a wartime setting

And think: "Hmmm...one could do a convertible hot rod tank here with the motor chromed up and showing..."
Sort of like this ?

I had the same idea for a cheap post war tractor with the armor removed.
The PE-95 would look good next to a 20 or 40 foot shipping container. Or a Russian KUNG vehicle shed.

The Australians should be along shortly to tell you how popular that was in reality.

Spot on, quite a number of these down here. The Stricklands Company did a universal Carrier Conversion, from surplus Australian LP1/2 carriers.
Real Deal, they cut down the armour, moved the driver to rear and added a rolling hitch. They were, by all accounts quite under-powered and not very effective, but a worthwhile stopgap post war until real tractors became available again.

My humble attempt

I have come across a number of Stuart and Grant conversions as well as these vehicles were a lot more common post war.
Sorry for the thread drift :-[

Many years ago I was visiting relatives in West Australia. We went for a drive around the area and after rounding a corner there was an M3 Light Tank, sans turret and some armour. When I mentioned it to my relatives later, they said, "Yeah, thats old Jonesy's he bought it after the war and converted it into a tractor and ran it for a few years on his property." Most probably still there, rusting away today.
Over a decade later, on the other side of the continent, I was on a train traveling from Adelaide to Yass, just north of Canberra when I noticed out of the window of the train an M3 Medium converted to a crane being used to repair a rail section which was damaged. I never discovered who used it or owned it.

I've seen similar vehicles in the US, too, where they seemed to be very popular with logging companies.

Yes, I could, absolutely, see that as a convertible hot-rod tank! 8) 8)
