To think that forum member davecov, has his 1/350 QEII aboard the real QEII --- he's got to be proud of that ----

But why does the QEII look bigger than the PoW in the middle pic ?

Opps. You just spoke the unspoken Robert. The PoW is a 80% scale model of the QE as they ran short of cash. Duck your head as you walk through the hatches.

Black Helicopters are enroute to your current location.

I'd say to guess the lens used is a wide angle which caused the PoW to shrink.

Well, males do experience shrinkage in cold water, so there's that.

Same Blenheim but back in 2002 not long after it was restored to flying condition, and before it crashed to be rebuilt the second time. I took these pics at Duxford IWM September Airshow that year.

Were you in the UK just to see the Blenheim or did you have to lie to the Mrs that you went for her reasons?  ;D

Hawker Tempest II MW763 / G-TEMT has been officially unveiled by Air Leasing / Ultimate Warbird Flights  and my goodness does she look good! Owned by Anglia Aircraft Restorations, the restoration has been undertaken by Air Leasing with just final completion of her Bristol Centaurus Mk.V engine remaining. Once she takes to air she will not only be the sole airworthy Tempest in the world, but the first to have ever been returned to flight as a warbird - I do not believe a Tempest II has flown since the final examples were retired by the Indian Air Force in the late 50s?

MW763 was built in 1945 and was held in storage before eventually being sold on to the Indian Air Force in 1948 where she became HA580. The Indian Tempests were retired by 1956 and several ended up as decoy aircraft at Poona Air Base where they remained  for several years. In 1979 Doug Arnold successfully acquired six of these airframes and shipped them back to the UK. Over the next 30 years she would spend periods in storage and receiving restoration work as she passed between Nick Grace and Chris Horsley, Autokraft Ltd and Tempest Two Ltd.

Sold on to Anglia Aircraft Restoration’s in 2014 she was initially transported to Weald Aviation Services ltd before the project moved into the care of Air Leasing by 2017, although Weald Aviation undertook the rebuild of her Centaurus engine. The restoration included the wings having significant sections replaced by Airframe Assemblies Ltd before they were reunited to the fuselage at Air Leasing.

She is painted in the post war colours of PR533 from 33 Sqn as based in Malaya and represents the very pinnacle of RAF piston fighters before the jet age. When she flies she will make a fine addition to the airshow circuit and will no doubt be a very popular aircraft! Having passed through the ownership on Nick Grace it is fitting that his son, Richard, and the Grace family business, Air Leasing, have been key in her long journey to flying again.

It was on my only visit back to the 'old country', but mainly for my Mom & Dad's 50th anniversary. There was a proviso that me & mrs kitnut visit as many airshows and aviation museums we could fit in while we were 'In-Country' though  ;)  . That particular weekend we did the Air-Britain Fly-In held at North Weald on Saturday (and which is only a few miles from Duxford), stayed overnight at my Aunt's place in Hertford which is about halfway between the two Air Shows. We then did the Duxford show on the Sunday.

Now that Tempest is definitely another aircraft I want to see flying, the other being the XP-82 ----

I love me some Sea Fury and think it's objectively the (slightly) better looking aircraft overall, but that shot of the Tempest II in that paint scheme outdoes most Sea Furies I've ever seen. That is just gorgeous in a special way. What a brilliant job they've done!

Cheers,

Ugly Planes @UglyPlanes
SNCAC NC.211 Cormoran

France's attempt at a dedicated paratroop transport resulted in a double-deck lump that could make a Beverley look svelte and sexy by comparison. Dismal performance meant that, of 11 airframes started, only two were completed, one crashing.

It would appear the PoW is now in warmers waters. No more shrinkage.

The Sea Fury is smaller and the fin shape is so good. On the other hand, the Sea Fury cockpit is raised which, to me, gives it a bit of a hump back profile. For that part I prefer the Tempest lines.

From what I've read, the 'hump-back' was a solution to an Air Ministry requirement at the time, where the pilot had to be able to see 7 degree downward over the top of the cowling.

Wow! Aside from the tracks, there's nothing recognizably Type 69 MBT left   I'm left wondering if there might be a bit of Type 85 APC DNA in there as well?

I love the stuff these guys do ... their FV432 to StuG or PzKpfw III conversions were amazing
