How do you view this forum?
« on: January 02, 2012, 12:31:53 PM »
Folks,

A little research if I may:  How do you view this forum?  Specifically, when you log in, do you only go to one particular area or do you go through all areas?

Do you use the "show unread posts" or " show new replies" functions?

Is there anything we can do to improve things in this regard?

Regards,

Greg

Profiles section is the priority for me, but I do read every thread on the forum.  I mainly use unread posts to keep up with everything on a daily basis.  I also have a couple of threads set to notify me when there are replies.

Cheers,

Logan

Same for me, when I have more time I browse everthing but when time is limited I use the"unread messages" feature.

I concur with my esteemed colleagues regarding use of the forum.  Profiles, new unread posts & tagged posts are my format.

Most often - show unread posts. On occasion I'll browse through at random. (This applies to ALL fora I'm on!)

Show unread posts is always the first choice, maybe going to the index page if I'm looking for something specific. I'm afraid I don't have nearly enough time to read every post, so titles matter!

What I usually do here (and other forums) is this: I start with "Show new replies to your posts" then I go to "Show unread posts since your last visit." I strive to click on every topic until the list becomes empty.

I almost never use any other type of navigation. However, considering the amount of topics that I have no personal interest in (armor, weapons and the likes) I may have to reconsider this in the future because I simply can't get the list cleared...

Strictly manual navigation for me. I habitually delete cached memory (and settings go with that) so everything shows as "Unread". I suspect that I'm a minority of one in this regard though.

I always go to "show unread posts" first on any forum and then go through the list.  I keep my cache and temp file folders clean as well but it never affects the posts.  The forum simply checks the time you last logged out with the current time and displays the appropriate posts.  Shouldn't have anything to do with your cache since its on the server end and not yours.  Isn't that how it works?

I have very little spare time mostly so I always go to NEW REPLIES first then NEW POSTS.

Unread posts is my main tool, and sometimes in the very heavy use threads, I'll look in every other or third day because there are just  so many of them. Same browse strategy over on the "Other Forum". Some items slip between the cracks.

One thing is the POSTING styles of some users. Some use a single thread with their name on it and others start a new one for each project.  To be honest, I'm not sure which is better - only that the mix of the two gets tricky sometimes.

Wonder how it would be if very prolific members should get their own "folder" or section or whatever.

Edit note---

Here is a thought that might make browsing a bit easier.

And let me know if such is already here in some form, little features get by me often enough.

A lot of threads proceed where the owner puts in a item (lets assume a gallery thread, a long column with lots of progressions, many profilers do this) into their thread maybe twice a week. How about a feature that would at a glance let us know when there is a new post from the owner/originator. That way we don't have to view the thread repeatedly just to see the kudos and questions / suggestions pile up.

Also, keep the front page simple and a one page size. The "other forum" has a bit of bewildering complexity to it.

Put the subdividing behind page one.

So we pretty much all do the same: "New replies" first and then "Unread posts" when we have the time...

One thing I wish were possible would be to exclude certain sub-forums from the latter when you're not interested. For instance, being only interested in aviation-related topics (and a bit of sci-fi), I wish I didn't have all the naval ship-, tank- or ordnance-related topics to go through.. Trouble is, if I don't click on them, they'll never disappear from the list!

Have you tried the "Notify" function - at the top of the page.

I don't think it is possible to so much automatically ignore certain themed posts.  It is however usual y the case that if you are using the "show unread posts" function that only those that have been posted since your last visit are displayed.  Therefore, if you see a post called for example "My HMS Invincible build" and decide that you are not interested and thus don't bother opening it, then when you next login and hit the "show unread posts", that thread will probably not be shown again...unless someone has posted something new.

Go to the main forum page, IE click "Home", scroll down and click the small button on the lower right called "Mark All Topics As Read."  Viola!  :D
