Mr J.P. Vieira has been doing some interesting work on He-162s. He got me thinking. What if they made a piston-engined Salamander with the prop on the front?

Ok so maybe my skills lie elsewhere, but I hope this was at least good for a laugh.

Except for the forward (vs pusher) prop, it reminds me of the Göppingen Gö 9

It's only when you start playing around with the Salamander that you realize just how small an aircraft it was! Inspires by JP and BdB, I played with a couple of mid-engined layouts.

After realizing that there'd be little left of the original He-162 airframe, I wondered if two smaller engines mounted on the wing might be better?

Salamander must be of air force of Happy Land. Quite the national marking for bashes

1/32 HE-162 could bashed into 1/72 bomber.

That'd work. Since the Argus are inverted Vs, there'd be no problem having them slung under the wings to keep the props clear of the canopy.

More Salamander silliness ...

1st scenario sticks with BdB's original piston premise but on a whole 'nuther scale. War's over and the Bad Guys won. Lufthansa has to replace Tante Ju quickly to satisfy Nazi egomania. Siegfried Günter responds with a supersized Salamander (aka the 'Lufthansa Lighter').

2nd scenario: Good Guys win, Heinkel bogs off to Sweden again like he did after WWI. After re-establishing Svenska Aero, he starts smuggling He-162 bits out of occupied Germany. The Swedish AF already has a better jet fighter and, unfortunately for Ernst, the market for jet-propelled light aircraft is quite small!

Thanks lads. Final bit of silliness (I promise!) ...

Top: "How had he ever been convinced to hire Dr-Ing Richard Vogt" Ernst Heinkel asked himself. Vogt was obsessed with flying boats and wouldn't shut up about tubular wing spars. Ein was für Dummkopf er war!

Now Vogt's ill-fated SA-162V flying boat modification was sunk to the bottom of the Lilla Värtan. 'Vatten' indeed. Gott sei dank!

Bottom: With Vogt gone to America, Ernst was free to concentrate on a lightplane derivative of the Salamander. The SA-262KF (KurirFlyg) had convenient car-door style entry and twin flat-4 pusher engines replaced the unpopular turbojet of the original SA-162.

That top one looks like a SAAB competitor for the Lake Buccaneer (got a ride one of those : thumbsup).

Bottom one looks more like it came from Piaggio
