Picked up a Testors paint pen in silver yesterday. I've used it before to prime filled areas to see what needs to be refilled. No prep, no cleanup and nice reveal of flaws. I'll try to get some pics tonight.

Here is the topside with the silver from the paint pen.

And the bottom side.

And more putty.

And more putty.

I had some trouble with the putty sticking to the silver paint when I tried to apply a thin layer. I don't recall that being a problem before. Either the putty pulled away from the paint or the paint came off and mixed with the putty. Oh well, just something to keep in the old tool box for when it works best. At least it revealed flaws so I could fix them.

It probably has a lot to do with how much paint you're putting on and how thin the putty is. The two likely react with the same solvents so transferring ink and putty or picking up putty on the ink is not that surprising if that's the case. You may have just been lucky before? :)

Painting issues again! A couple coats of gloss white from the hardware store and then it wrinkled up in different spots. Sanded down but what to use so it doesn’t happen again? The hardware store paint may have been old so I don’t want to use it again. Probably should just spend a couple bucks and get some spray acrylic. Going for anti flash white.

Poor Kerick, sorry my skills are not high enough to provide you with a cure. But I hope this great model may be finished someday... ;)

While it definitely doesn't cure every problem, using spray bombs from the hardware store is probably the least controllable application method. You can't vary the pressure, viscosity, spray amount, anything.

An airbrush, even a very cheap one from China, is the way to go for this sort of application.

That said, I've had better luck using a spray bomb with multiple light coats, especially for things like white that tend to be a bit translucent, than trying to get good coverage in one or even two coats. It also gives you the opportunity to do some light sanding between coats if things are looking a bit too thick in areas.

You are right on all counts my friend. Just wish I could keep from spraying on "just a little bit more". Gets me every time.

Well this one has sat around long enough. Time to finish it. I’m battling a cold right now but I was messing around with landing gear options. I found a good looking nose gear and scrounged up some main gear wheels. They won’t all match perfectly but hopefully it will be good enough when painted. I might go with the hemp over grey version yet but I’m not sure. At least the paint that was driving me nuts has had lots of time to cure and off gas and whatever else it might do. Hopefully things will behave whatever scheme I decide on.

Excellent!

So is your astonishing transformation also a scale-o-rama? I note that the Lindberg Victor kit is 1/96 scale but what about the Phantom (?) cockpit section? Is that in 1/72nd?

Holy thread revival!  Good to see this getting some attention.  LMK if you need a set of Vulcan wings for the same purpose.

The Phantom cockpit is 1/144 scale so that rescales everything.

Sounds interesting. Too many things going on right now. I just have to finish some stuff that’s been laying around far too long. I’ll keep it in mind.

Hmmmm…..  Now I will have to measure the wing span and calculate a RW number. Easy peasy.
I’m working on some main gear and nose gear. I’ll use the kit main gear wells but the nose gear well will just be black decal. It’s solid plastic and putty anyway.

It’s in the “need to finish this” line up. Now if I can hold off from starting anything new!

Finding a paint brand that carries hemp! Doesn’t seem like a very popular choice.
