Via a CAF member.

"Dusty landing" A CH-147 D Chinook on short final at a remote isolated FOB in Afghanistan 2010. Took this photo while sitting in a door-less Griffon helicopter with a small (ironically) water proof point & shoot camera. Picture shows the true effect of the powerful down wash and the very fine dust/sand of Afghanistan.

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

That explains a few things about the need for some of the R&D I was involved in on the V-22 - much improved engine inlet filtering.

Reminds me of the due cloud kicked up by a C-5 at Baghdad airport. It dust quite a few of us.

Probably wasn't that thick the time in Lebanon, when there was a chopper with some "mechanical" sitting on the elevated pad that we usually used. Needing to get some VIPs out, we got the other one on a flat pad that had not been used for a long time.

I think it was in the Griffon Spitfire Data File book, it says that the very last official use of a Spitfire in the RAF was a PR.XIX that was used in tests so the RAE could work out how the Lightnings could tackle the Malaysian Indonesian P-51's during the policing action the RAF got tangled up with.  They found that zooming up from below in the Spitfires blind spot just like that was the best way to do it, zoom up, shoot, overshoot to way up, fly away then swoop down low do it all over again using their superior vertical speed and not getting into any dogfights.

Errr...that would be Indonesian Mustangs given it was Malaysia they were defending.  Here are a couple of photos from the trails:

Mind you, the Indonesian P-51s do look cool:

On the topic of jets vs props, there was a rumour that a Royal Navy Buccaneer S.1 had what the pilot believed was a near-miss with a P-51D Mustang over the South China Sea. When the aircraft returned to the carrier a series of 50.cal bullet holes were spotted in the wing indicating that the Buccaneer had in fact been attacked but no critical systems were hit.
