Sukhoi Su-27 and derivative ideas and inspiration
« on: December 28, 2011, 02:34:13 PM »
Hi folks,

A dedicated thread for your ideas for the Su-27/30/32/34 family.

To begin with, how about a Su-34VG with wings also from the Sukhoi stable:

Here is the Sukhoi Su-27RV (NATO: "Flanker-Q"). The text of the advertisement is supposed to say: "Tomorrow's war... today" but I do not guarantee the exactness of my Russian!

And here is the Su-27N "Flanker-J", a pretty standard Su-27 in JASDF (Japanese Air Force) guise.

From here.

Come to think of it, I can't seem to recall any real-life manned fighter being equipped with winglets.  What compelled the author to add winglets?

Well, the MiG-25 briefly had them on tip file tanks but this was dispensed with:

The next closest I can think of was the early Yak-130 configuration (not technically a fighter I know):

I suspect they were added simply for the cool look in the example you found though.

That is an interesting picture, GT'. The E266 prototype Foxbat had larger tip tanks and downward pitched single fins on their outsides. This pictured machine looks like a modern photo, and the windscreen is different, no circular forward brace at all, rather more like a Mig 29 canopy and there are some chines that are not completely like the Foxhound's (and no second cockpit!) but the landing gear is Mig - 31, plus those wingtip devices are mysterious. And a retracting IFR probe as well. Its not a 25, but not quite a 31 either.

You may have a mystery ship on our hands.

^ It's a Foxhound alright, Jim, but not as we know it.  ;)
It's the prototype of the MiG-31M (LINK), an advanced variant of the Foxhound that was planned, but ultimately not adopted. Pretty potent beast, with six R-37/AA-9 and four RV-77/AA-12.

I've got this idea of converting a Su-27 to have a single free-turbine engine.  I found that the left over props I have from my C-130J will fit in between the tail booms of the Su-27.  At the moment, it's still in the 'in my mind' process ----

The parts are both from the Airfix 1/72 Su-27 and C-130J kits

Two engines with the free turbines driving a single prop, or contra-prop, setup through a combining gearbox?  Basically a very big brother to the PT6T?

I was thinking just one engine and with contra-props.  I was looking for an airframe which wouldn't need changing much to get the prop diameter in between the booms and the Su-27 is large enough to do that.  I'd remove the two existing engines and build up the fuselage from the cockpit to the rear end.  I found in the spares box a large exhaust nozzle where I've drilled a series of equally spaced holes in it, I plan on using all the blades in the photo so there will be 12 to each row, fortunately the plastic is quite soft so twisting one set of twelve to the opposite hand isn't to much trouble.

It's really a thought extention to this build below I did some time ago, using most of a Mig-29 and Hawk T.1

Thought for a SEAD Su-34/Su-33KUB: one KH-41 ARM variant on centerline, for going after AEGIS cruisers, and two KH-31PD missiles under each wing for going after AEW (E-2 et al.) assets plus ESM pods on wingtips.  Perhaps with droptanks on one of the remaining hardpoints under each wing?

Quite a daunting prospect when one considers the performance specs.  Would certainly present a challenge for the ship crew if they didn't detect early enough.

Does anyone know if there is a 1/48 Kh-41 available.  I know it is available in 1/72.

A fake tease...or is it? ;)

Bit of a bump, but I've decided I *have*  to make this a real thing, the only question is when, and whether to use a twin-seater like in this artwork, or a single-seater like the Skull Leader always was in the show. I have the decals (I think VF-0S decals will be appropriate in size for a Su-27); I have plenty of Macross ordnance (even if this artwork uses Russian missiles); and I will have two Revell (ex-Zvezda) Su-27SM single-seaters in hand by next week...

My first single-seater is going to be painted up as "Red 06", in the gorgeous blue/blue scheme with the white nose and fin tips. No question about it, it's one of the prettiest official Flanker schemes ever devised, and one of the easiest to paint. Of course I'm making it.

My second single-seater will either be painted up like the picture above; or as either an F-22A or a Eurofighter Typhoon (I have two unused decal sheets each for the F-22 and Typhoon, courtesy of a couple of broken Revell birds. I can make either a US, British or German version rather easily). It will be armed with appropriate missiles, because I have tons of them (I found forty AIM-120Cs and fourteen AIM-9X in usable condition in my spares box; as well as four IRIS-T, four ASRAAM, and eight Meteor missiles. Plus four of each type of cruise missile included in the Typhoon kits... possibly with more still on the sprues since I've found three half-built Typhoon airframes but only two sets of missiles).

I'm also planning a Su-27UB done up in F-15E colors, with US weapons (not sure exactly what to use, single 2000 lb JDAMS, twin-racked 500- or 1000 lb JDAMs, or MERs with CBUs reminiscent of the actual Su-30...),  and very likely a Su-33 done up as an F/A-18E. Plus of course one of each in an *official* scheme.

So I got my Su-27SM kits, still wasn't sure what to do with the second one, and when I inspect the pieces I see there's a deep sink-mark in the headrest for one of the K-36DM seats. "Okay, just install the pilot, it won't be visible", I thought.

Then after painting up both pits in standard Flanker colors, I screwed up one of the instrument panel decals with Mr Mark Softner. Wasn't a complete disaster, the decal was still *there*, just distorted. "All right, no one will be looking at that part anyway once the thing is assembled, especially if the pilot is in there and the canopy closed."

And then when I'm assembling the damned seat, one of the armrests fails to separate from my finger while it was over the table, and the damned part lands on my floor. "Screw this, where are my F-22 leftovers?"

Looks like plan "F-27" is a go, whether I'd intended it seriously or not. Also, going to have to figure out which of the bang seats in my collection will be easiest to fit into the cockpit, the Revell ACES-II seat looks a little long, the front edge of the seat ends up interfering with the control stick. Maybe use the sidestick from the F-22?
